Who Are We? Campus Martius
Campus Martius Park is an important gathering area for downtown Detroit. The re-established commercial center is undergoing constant renovation, with added public attractions such as new street level cafes and public sculptures to help attract Detroiters to one of the most vibrant parts of the city. Zlati Meyer states that Campus Martius helps to essentially revitalize downtown Detroit both economically and socially by getting people outside to enjoy their city (Meyer). Known as the “Point of Origin", the park is one of Detroit’s premiere areas. The historical decay and eventful rise of Campus Martius demonstrate Detroit’s own struggle for restoration. From its historical significance, physical, and behavioral aspects Campus Martius illustrates the city of Detroit and its citizens, a hopeful and persistent group of people.
Campus Martius, translated as “military ground” in Latin, was named after a 180-foot stockade in Marietta, Ohio. It served as a militia training area in the late 18th century (Campus Martius). The fire of 1805 severely damaged the city of Detroit, prompting Judge Augustus Woodward to remake the entire city on a grid plan similar to Washington, D.C (Martelle). He organized the street and park layouts, and elicited help from some of the most recognized Canadian surveyors. They established the “Point of Origin” located in present day Campus Martius. This point is now the center of Michigan’s coordinate grid system; in other words, 5 mile road is 5 miles north of Campus Martius (About Campus). At that time, the area around Campus Martius was unsuitable for industrial landscape, as it was very marshy. In 1847, the council accordingly filled the area with 100 yards of earth, allowing for the development of the park’s notable greenery (Campus Martius). The first Michigan Regiment received its colors at the park before reporting to duty in the Civil War, and the park was eventually selected as the location for the Civil War monument (About Campus). Unfortunately, the park slowly began to fade away in the 1900s as the city reconfigured the area to accommodate for an increase in traffic marked by the automobile era. The park continued its decline into the mid-20th century (About Campus). September of 1999 marks the revitalization of the park by Former Mayor Dennis Archer and the Detroit 300 Inc (Campus Martius). The city council approved the reconstruction plan in May 2003, and the grand opening of the park occurred November 19th, 2004 (About Campus). Today, Campus Martius hosts the annual ice rink, Detroit’s Christmas tree, the Motown Winter Blast, and two stages for live entertainment, all of which gather citizens together to enjoy what Detroit has to offer.
Campus Martius is a circular area of about two square blocks surrounded by several buildings. Its location makes it the centerpiece of the historic city of Detroit. A couple of banks corner the southern and eastern side of the park, while several restaurants surround the remaining parts of the area. Dining options are ethnically diverse, with Asian, Hispanic, and Russian cafes a short walk from the park. The Woodward fountain with its multiple water jets is the cornerstone of the park. The main Bistro features a French dining experience in a causal atmosphere that overlooks the fountain. Trees and flowers enclose the periphery of the park. The Michigan Soldiers and Sailors monument sits atop a tall granite base near the south end. Two Corner Markers provide visible beacons at the park entrance. The Woodward Marker is representative of industry and technology, and the Monroe Marker is representative of Arts and Culture (Campus Martius). Park gardens and tree canopies establish a tranquil atmosphere throughout the park. Above all, Campus Martius Park provides a serene and diverse setting amidst the commotion of downtown

(Ajmani).
I observed several people at the park during the day of my visit. They all seemed to be enjoying themselves. There were mainly elderly people, although there was a younger segment of the population dining at the Bistro. Most of the visitors were either playing chess in the garden, or taking a stroll and casually observing the scenery. Generally, Campus Martius is a restful social lounge in the midst of downtown Detroit.
Physical and behavioral analyses of Campus Martius reveal who we are as Detroiters. Its location as the center of the grid system, surrounded by commerce and financial activity, displays the functional practicality of the city and the citizen’s desire for organization and structure. Detroit therefore fits American city planner Kevin Lynch’s practical model of a city (Rybczynski). Putting banks around the park is Detroit’s attempt at bringing business and financial activity to help revitalize the city. The myriad of dining options demonstrates Detroit as a multicultural city. Campus Martius provides live entertainment to satisfy our need for social gatherings. The Sailors and Soldiers monument, frequently visited by the park patrons, shows our patriotism to the city of Detroit. The attitude and demeanor of the park visitors is indicative of Detroiters’ optimistic outlook on the future of the city despite its past struggles. “This is the positive side of Detroit,” explains Luaren at Detroit’s 313th birthday celebration held at Campus Martius. The celebration “was all about the good things, from new investment downtown to a growing sense of community” (Abdel-Razzaq).
Campus Martius represents a certain section of Detroiters and their history. It would be fallacious to argue that the park accurately represents all of Detroit. The small sample size of Campus Martius does not account for the poverty and crime still prevalent throughout the city. Four out of ten Detroit families live below the poverty line, making “Detroit the poorest of the nation’s big cities” (Martelle). The park can, however, serve as template for the rest of Detroit. Its downfall in the late 20th century and re-establishment in 2004 demonstrate the revitalization Detroiters are capable of.

...Joe Joseph Professor Shana Bakes ENG-111-FON05 1 April 2015 A College Education in Today’s Society Today’s society has given everyone a better opportunity to better themselves through a college education. With jobs being scarce, and the economy being down, choosing to go to college is not only beneficial, but necessary. Community colleges have given those who did not excel in high school a chance to start over, as well as people who cannot afford university tuition costs. Whether you choose a prestigious university or your local community college, having a college education could help you land a better job. Along with having success in the work field, a college education can benefit you internally and socially as well. With the job market the way it is, having a college degree automatically gives you a better chance in receiving a job over someone with only a high school diploma. Just having the college education puts you at better odds, but obtaining a degree is the best way to earn more money. In a 2005 article, it was stated, “The earnings of students who obtain a baccalaureate degree are 10% to 20% higher than the earnings of associate degree holders. In addition, Kane and Rouse found the economic returns associated with a community college degree to be roughly 15% to 25% higher than those associated with a high school diploma.” (Marcotte). This gives an example on the difference between a community college degree and a degree from a four-year university. Having either...

Personal Statement: Why We Where We Are

...“Why are we where we are?” people ask. Well, I’m here in this world because I was meant to be. I am here in this school because it was my choice to come here and I am a freshman because I worked hard, studied, did all my work and put a lot of effort into my future. When I came to the US, I did not know any English. However, I did not want to give up. I was very motivated and determined to prove to my family that I can be someone. Perhaps, I didn't give my all just to school but I know that where I am at right now was my goal. Perhaps, I was too overwhelmed and wanted to release some stress by having fun every weekend but when it came to school I was all about it. Another reason why I believe I am where I am at right now is because my grandfather...

The United Kingdom of Great Briatain, is a group of countries that like to think they are independent. Despite this, the fact is they are merged to a much bigger picture of the European Union. The inclusion of the UK has drawn many positives over the years with the economy, easy holidays, simpler migration and more than anything help from the other large nations in the EU. People from areas outside of the EU like the USA or Asia, would have to get a visa issued to their passport before they can even have a holiday. For people holding passports for countries inside the EU, they can move freely with not much problem and get support in the countries they are travelling to. This was has been ok for many years but in recent times the joining of several smaller countries to the EU has brought an unprecedented influx of immigration to the shore of the UK that has quickly escalated into a national crisis. This is something that has only resulted in only minute positives, with the country now struggling to cope with the demand for jobs and housing causing a lot of anger amongst the people. The UK is made up of England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, which are all considered highly developed courtiers in there own right. Where We Stand with Isis

...Where We Stand With ISIS This past weeks newspaper clipping informs us that defense chiefs from 22 nations met at an air base in Washington, D.C. on the matter of how ISIS is going to be a long term campaign, how every individual state will be able to cooperate, and what they can do to continue on delivering the humanitarian assistance of all the populations that have been affected. This article is a perfect example on foreign policy and how president Obama is acting on the actions of ISIS and what he has done to try and stop them. Just like we discussed in class, foreign policy is the process of decision-making and at this very moment Obama is starting to evaluate different options on decision-making. President Obama is in the starting point of the decision-making process, which is the rational model. The rational model consists of 4 main objectives: set goals, evaluate their importance, calculate the costs and benefits, and choose which action has the highest benefits and lowest cost. President Obama exemplifies this process by meeting with 22 defense chiefs on the matters of ISIS and also a senior military official stated, “"This meeting is to share our vision, discuss coordination and our common understanding of the way ahead." Again, the U.S. led coalition is still in the works of implementing a more thorough action on ISIS. The United States foreign policy towards ISIS is an example of relative power; the perceived amount of power one person or entity...

Where Do We Go Now Respone

...Where Do We Go Now? At the end of the film Where Do We Go Now?, the Christian and Muslim women of the village swapped religions overnight leaving the men confused on to what was going on. While men struggled with this decision, the women carried about regular duties as if nothing had changed in their village. After this abrupt shift the men were on the way to bury Nassim, but when they got there, they were stuck trying to figure out which side to put him on, Muslim or Christian. Since the women of the village switched their religions, the men were uncertain as to whether or not Nassim, a Christian, should be buried in the Muslim or Christian side, leading the men to turn around in unison and ask the women “where do we go now?”. This was a really funny way to end the film, and also unexpected. It went from a serious moment, the funeral/ burial, to the confusion of the men of the village. The ending of the movie called for an alternative society in which there are no divisions among the villagers which is demonstrated through religious status. When the men were trying to figure out on which side to bury Nassim, I was thinking why they don’t just put him in the middle, where there would be no difference between Christian or Muslim. This is exactly what the women were trying to do throughout the entire movie and finally accomplished by switching from one religion to another, they wanted the war between two religions to end. This swap in the religions puts into...

Photo Manipulation: Where Should We Draw the Line?

...debate about photo manipulation is known to all photographers; amateurs and experts alike. Does this process enhance images or distort the truth? Photo manipulation has been around about as long as photography. There are examples that date back to as early as 1860. With the digital age, photo manipulation has taken huge leaps. You can see examples of digital manipulation in almost everything in today’s digital age, from advertisements to high end photo galleries. It is second nature. So second nature that we do not even think about some aspects of it and how it has changed and is continuing to change the world of photography. Is the subtle alterations to color balance or contrast considered photo manipulation?” That depends. Are you trying to change a mood, or trying to deceive the viewer in any way? Or are you making an artistic illusion? Does it matter which you are doing? Therein lays the debate: Photo Manipulations; is this a new dilemma and where do we draw the line? So what exactly is photo manipulation? According to Reference.com photo manipulation is the application of image editing techniques to photographs in order to create an illusion or deception (in contrast to mere enhancement or correction), through analog or digital means. (reference) So what exactly is photo editing? Thefreedictionary.com defines edit as a means to revise, correct, or improve… (reference), so that would mean revise, correct, or improve a photo. We'Ve Gone Beyond Where We Should'Ve Gone

...We’ve Gone Beyond Where We Should’ve Gone For years now the American people have been questioning what we have been fighting for in Iraq. Starting way back with our invasion in 2003, the Iraq War has now lasted for seven years, but for some reason the public does not truly know what is going on in Iraq or at this point why we are even there. The extent of most Americans knowledge of the war is what they see and hear from the media. The media is sheltering us from what is really going on by only showing the triumphs and none of the tribulations of the war. The successful soft rock artist Jack Johnson puts it best when he suggests that we just “sleep through the static”(songmeanings) Johnson’s song “Sleep Through the Static” exemplifies some of the problems Americans are facing with the Iraq War. He does this through his meaningful but sarcastic lines and catchy melody, making it in my opinion a good text. A good text takes on its own meaning for everyone, which is the beauty of having the opportunity to define what I feel a good text is. To me a good text not only needs to be something you can enjoy but also something that you can interpret and find a new meaning every time you come across it. A good song can be hard to define. A song is an art form in which the artist has the opportunity to express their opinion, and potentially influence others. Most people on the surface view a good song to be one that sells a lot of records, is played on the radio a lot, or one in which...

Maybe there’s a universe out there — happening now — where we end up together and when I close my eyes at night, I’m not dreaming the way a normal person would. Instead I’m seeing flashes of our lives in the multiverse. They’re not simple dreams because I miss you, right? They’re scientific, anachronistic visions. For instance: In this universe, I don’t want a family, but maybe in another, I’m more of the type to settle down. Maybe there’s a universe where you hold my hand while I give birth to our daughter in a white hospital room with pink flowers and fuzzy teddy bears on the window sill. Where we take family vacations and pose for dorky pictures in our neon bathing suits on the sands of a Florida beach. Where we curl up to watch a cheesy movie at the end of a long day in our big, green, suburban house once the kids have fallen asleep. Maybe there’s a universe where we are middle-aged and taking our child to college and bickering over where to put her dresser or what posters she should hang up. Where you kiss her on the forehead ‘goodbye’ and we drive home in contented, proud silence, your fingers grazing my knuckles, our wedding rings glistening. Where we both have gray hair and we laugh and smile and hug and drink...

...One way we could find the GCD of two integers is by trial and error. Another way is that we could prime factorize each integer, and from the prime factorization, see which factors are common between the two integers. However, both of these become very time consuming as soon as the integers are relatively large. However, Euclid devised a fairly simple and efficient algorithm to determine the GCD of two integers. The algorithm basically makes use of the division algorithm repeatedly. Let’s say you are trying to find the GCD(a,b), where a and b are integers with a ( b > 0 Euclid’s algorithm says to write out the following: a = q1b + r1, where 0 < r < b b = q2r1 + r2, where 0 < r2 < r1 r1 = q3r2 + r3, where 0 < r3 < r2 . . ri = qi+2ri+1+ ri+2, where 0 < ri+2 < ri+1 . . rk-1 = qk+1rk Euclid’s algorithm says that the GCD(a,b) = rk This might make more sense if we look at an example: Consider computing GCD(125, 87) 125 = 1*87 + 38 87. = 2*38 + 11 38. = 3*11 + 5 11 = 2*5 + 1 5. = 5*1 Thus, we find that GCD(125,87) = 1. Let’s look at one more quickly, GCD(125, 20) 125 = 6*20 + 5 20. = 4*5, thus, the GCD(125,20) = 5 Proof That Euclid’s Algorithm Works Now, we should prove that this algorithm really does always give us the GCD of the two numbers “passed to it”. First I will show that the number the algorithm produces is indeed a divisor of a and b. a = q1b + r1, where 0 < r < b b = q2r1 + r2, where 0 < r2...
