Technology has increasingly become a large part of our lives and has transformed the way we live, work, and play. Consequently, technology has created novel opportunities for the development of communication capabilities for individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and their supporters (Shane, Laubscher, Schlosser, Flynn, Sorce, & Abramson, 2012; Knight, McKissick, & Saunders, 2013). In recent decades, much advancement has occurred involving the application of computer technology with treatments for diverse clinical populations (Wainer & Ingersoll, 2011). For individuals with ASD specifically, the use of technology to provide intervention targeting social-communication deficits has been demonstrated to show promising results (Wainer & Ingersoll, 2011). …show more content…
However, there is more potential for technology integration to help these individuals; for example the use of interactive computer programs for skill development (Wainer & Ingersoll, 2011). Additionally, new advancements in technology have increased the access to different types of interventions for individuals with ASD (Wainer & Ingersoll, 2011). The use of computer and internet technology supports individuals with ASD develop skills in a standardized, predictable, and controlled environment while allowing the individual to work at their own pace and ability level, as well as encourage active participation in their own development and education (Wainer & Ingersoll, 2011).
Furthermore, if technology continues on this path educators will need to extend their roles and not only teach individuals with ASD how to use the technology to help them communicate and learn, but also how to use technology in order to become more active in society (Knight, McKissick, & Saunders,
