Racial Profiling Targets Muslims in Airports

The Constitution declares, “The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated” (Madison n.p). As a result of the terrorist attack on September 11, 2001, Muslim Americans have become frequent victims of racial profiling in airports through means of prejudicial views and invasion of privacy. In return, this violates their civil liberties of protection from unjustifiable searches and seizures.

A group of Muslim scholars argues against body scanning in airports, “ [They] issued a fatwa [religious ruling] this week that says going through the airport scanners would violate Islamic rules on modesty. It is a violation of clear Islamic teachings that men or women be seen naked by other men and women … Islam highly emphasizes haya (modesty) and considers it part of faith” (Warikoo n.p). Though it is against Muslim customs, airport security disregards the issue. Samar Kaukab, for example, was a victim of racial profiling at O’Hare airport, “ Further searches produced no indication of anything being hidden beneath her hijab. The escalating nature of the search was completely unjustified … Kaukab removed her hijab, and the female guards combed their fingers through her head and scalp and began to strip the young woman unwillingly of her clothing … Ms. Kaukab was identified and subjected to a humiliating search not because she posed any security threat, but only because her wearing a hijab identified her as a Muslim ” ( Porter n.p). A Muslims woman’s hijab and clothing symbolize modesty and the TSA officials did not respect that Islamic custom. She later goes on to say that she felt victimized, embarrassed and humiliated.
