Watchmen Archetype

...He has written characters like Superman on how one struggles to understand what society wants that offer comparison to the Comedian, and how he encourages society to understand that wants are not as important as their needs. Batman and Ozymandias both show the distinction of how superhumans attempt to achieve their goals, and even acknowledging the effects, no matter good or bad, that they have on others. Rorschach and Wonder are both characters that’s setbacks allows them to force anger on wrongdoings, and how their moral codes are reflected on the character that they are. Finally, the epilogue scene written by Mark W. is a nod that even those who are powerful share human characteristics, emotionally, philosophically, and psychologically. Even characters outside of the DC universe such as Vibiana from Boxers written by Gene Luen Yang have developed the same deconstructive belief on what makes a hero tragic. In comparison to Watchmen and Kingdom Come, both novels contain characters that share their characteristics of what defines an archetype or a stereotype but ultimately it is through the patterns of characterization that draws the distinction, and it is through the graphic novel of Watchmen that dramatizes how the superhero stereotype is portrayed...

Gender Roles in Gotham

...Throughout media texts, most men share certain common characteristics. They are strong, stoic, protective, rational and independent, to name a few. Characters such as James Bond, Tony Soprano and most superheroes greatly exemplify many of these qualities. Reoccurring representations of men with these same attributes contribute to what is called hegemonic masculinity, or “normative male behavior” (Iftkhar, November 6, 2014). This stereotype causes the audience to associate certain qualities with men. Gotham, a new television series that creatively divulges the backstories of Batman and his most famous rivals, appeals to a male audience and represents masculinity in the classic ways. Through both character illustration and dialogue, Gotham portrays most of its male characters as strong, aggressive, and independent protectors, reinforcing the conception of hegemonic masculinity. At the same time, the show also presents characters who challenge or pervert those norms exploring invalidity of the stereotype. The city of Gotham is in bad shape. Crime lords rule and have made deals with the Gotham County Police Department to keep it that way. For example, some doctors work on the black market to treat criminals and police officers agree not to arrest them in exchange for information about the patients they see. In addition to structured crime, strange murders frequently occur in the city. James Gordon, newly appointed police homicide detective and son of former district attorney...

...the rest of the party guests. These three camera techniques create a feeling of sickness, fear and intimidation as the audience can only focus on the Joker, much like Rachel. Rachel is presented as a very strong character throughout the film, yet trembles in the Jokers presence in this scene. These camera techniques show the audience how the Joker can instil fear into even the strongest and most respectable characters. Whilst the camera work in The Party scene helps develop the audiences understanding of the Joker, it also helps the audience understand Batman, and why he is so feared by Gotham’s criminal society. Towards the end of The Party scene, Rachel is thrown out of a window in the top floor of one of Gotham’s many skyscrapers. Without hesitating the Batman follows Rachel out the window. The camera follows Batman out the window, and shows the full height and size of the drop. This helps show the audience how fearless Batman is, and really demonstrates hiss selflessness and will to save those he loves The editing pace during The Party scene plays an important part in conveying themes and ideas. Examples Of Escapism In Batman

...“Making a serious, psychologically nuanced film about a man who dresses up like a giant bat is no mean feat. It's a fundamentally ridiculous idea, and Nolan knew that the only way to do it was to really dig down into the mindset…” (Emma Dibdin, Global Features Editor at DigitalSpy) Detecting the intertextual relationship between DC’s Batman comics from the Golden and Silver Ages and the 2005 movie adaption, Batman Begins directed by Christopher Nolan enriched my understanding of American identity. Robert Kane created the Caped Crusaders in the 1950s with the intention of creating a source of escapism for the young men and boys through an iconic character to distract them from the perils of the Cold War (1942-1991)[1]. Nolan’s Batman Begins on the other hand creates a neorealist platform for the Dark Knight to reinvent himself and display the transformation of American Identity over the life of the Batman franchise. The creators of the comic book strongly endorsed the war effort and patriotism as a heroic action every young man should follow, while tucking away the destruction caused by the war, while Nolan focuses on the post-9/11...

Joker

...arch-nemesis of DC Comics’ superhero Batman. The Joker is noted for his clownlike appearance and sick humour. The Joker, initially portrayed as a small-time crook, was disfigured and driven insane by an accident with toxic chemicals. He was depicted with chalk-white skin, ruby-red lips permanently fixed in a demonic grin, and bright green hair. He was created in 1940 by illustrator Bob Kane and writer Bill Finger; their collaborator Jerry Robinson also claimed credit for the character’s inspiration. Early stories portrayed him (post-accident) as a homicidal psychopath, but by the mid-1950s he had been softened into a thief whose crimes were also gags. In the 1960s the character devolved into outright camp in a farcical Batman television series. In the 1970s, writer Denny O’Neil and artist Neal Adams revitalized the Joker’s image, making him once again a wickedly menacing killer. Alan Moore and Brian Bolland’s 1988 story The Killing Joke revised and complicated his origin, ultimately suggesting that he might be not only lying about his past but unsure of it himself. Stories from this era focused on the Joker’s insanity and explored his relationship with Batman, suggesting that the two were equally insane but channeled their energies in opposite directions. The Joker has appeared in many media incarnations of Batman. Among the notable actors to portray him were Cesar Romero in the 1960s television series, Jack Nicholson in the film Batman (1989), and Heath Ledger in The Dark...

Wonder Woman

...15 October 2014 Wonder Woman Children always looking for a positive role model to have, and many end up choosing superheroes they see in their favorite comic books or ones they have seen in the media. Since children are so easily affected by things they see in their childhood, having discriminatory elements in these influential characters may be problematic. “The Wonder Woman Precedent: Female (Super) Heroism on Trial” written by Julie D. O’Reilly, was published in the Journal of American Culture in 2005. O’Reilly is a professor of communication and women and gender at Heidelberg University. In “The Wonder Woman Precedent”, she writes about the hardships that female superheroes in the media must face that male superheroes do not go through. Throughout her article she compares Wonder Woman, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and the sisters of Charmed to male superheroes like Superman and Jake 2.0. “Wonder Woman” written by Gloria Steinem, is an excerpt from a book written about Wonder Woman. Steinem is well known activist, feminist, and author. “Wonder Woman” talks about how Wonder Woman helped shape Steinem to become the woman she is today. O’Reilly and Steinem both believe that the creator of Wonder Woman views on feminism are not exactly correct. However, both authors share opposing viewpoints on the trials female superheroes face and if wonder woman is a feminist icon. The creator of Wonder Woman, not surprising to most, was a man. William Moulton Marston, who wrote the Wonder...

Batman Editorial

...Batman’s unorthodox, vigilante ways have flooded the streets of Gotham. Thus, there has been ongoing debates on whether or not he is right or wrong. Batman has recently been discussed as an “aberrant psychotic force” (Miller 1.41.7), as well as a ruthless vigilante, that could be tampering with the foundations of our democracy. It has also been said that a whole new generation, might be at risk of being tainted and influenced negatively based on Batman’s actions of crime fighting. Consequently, Batman’s vigilante ways need to be hindered, to prevent a negative influential impact on Gotham’s society. Any mentally stable individual can conclude a respectable perspective of the Batman. The motives and methods that he uses can easily be identified as deranged. An “aberrant psychotic force” (Miller 1.41.7) might simply be the most straightforward way to describe the vigilante menace. People then approach the question “What instances would consider him unstable?” There are many circumstances that show the Batman’s indecent behavior, but let’s take a prime example of his enjoyment for inducing fear onto others. The vigilante has been seen not long ago on Gotham Towers’ roof top demonstrating his “negotiating” tactics. Alongside the Batman was a member of the mutant gang, tied up to the edge of the building. Where suddenly the gang member was pushed off, leaving him swaying from the highest point in the city (MIller68). These tactics used, cannot be seen as normal, because it is...

Star Wars The Force Awakens Essay

..."Star Wars: The Force Awakens" is only days away from its theater release. As such, fans are excited and can't help but want to find out more about the film's plot, characters, and secrets. It is a fact that the film is set to introduce new villain Kylo Ren (Adam Driver). However, some curious details about the character have only been revealed recently, via Games Radar. According to the recent report, Ren isn't a Sith despite his devotion to the Dark Side. Director JJ Abrams said the following about the villain's background: "He is a character who came to the name of Kylo Ren when he joined a group called the Knights Of Ren." In the "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" trailer, Ren appeared to be extremely devoted to Darth Vader's memory when a scene showed him talking to the former Dark Lord's old mask. Apparently, despite Vader turning to the good side in the old films, his evilness is crucial to the new "Star Wars" plot. "That all came out of conversations about what would have happened if the Nazis all went to Argentina but then started working together again?" Abrams said. "What could be born of that? Could the First Order exist as a group that actually admired the Empire? Could the work of the Empire be seen as unfulfilled? And could Vader be a martyr? Could there be a need to see through what didn't get done?" As noted by The Inquisitr, perhaps most significant of all recent reveals is that there could be a bigger villain behind Ren, since Supreme Leader Snoke is his...

Batman V Superman: Dawn of a Disaster

...Rant: Batman V Superman Well, I may be a week late to the party, but that won't stop me from writing about this terrible movie. That's right, I said it. This movie is trash and there is no debate. Of course, you can enjoy this movie and like it, that's your opinion, but you can't say that this movie was 'good' in any way. Why have I decided to write about this movie? Well, I was on Instagram the other day and there were way too many comments on various posts actually DEFENDING this piece of shit. I got into a number of arguments with random people because they were just trashing on other people and the critics for disliking the movie. I cannot believe how hard headed some blind fanboys are. To the point where I knew I clearly won the argument because their next replies were always something like: "You're just a dumb fag who hates on movies go kill yourself". I'm not exaggerating. These people need to be stopped. They need to open their eyes and see that this movie was not good AT ALL. Some more examples of comments I found on Instagram were like "This movie is perfection" or "Everyone who hates this movie is stupid and wouldn't understand the dark theme because they only like light-hearted Marvel movies". What exactly was wrong with this movie? Everything. I mean the fight scenes were pretty cool, but that's about it. It was just an overall mess. The story jumped around everywhere and couldn't focus on anything. Let's start with the first thing wrong, the title. It shouldn't...

Superman Returns: Does The World Need A Savior?

...Does the World Need a Savior? Superman Returns and the Man of Steel are all two movies that adapted from the comic and they all talk about the story of Superman. They have many places in common. The main characters’ names, Lois and Clark, are the same. They all depict the Superman, the son of El, with super power. Superman helps humanity to keep the order of the world. However, the figures of superman in Superman Returns and in the Man of Steel have some theological differences. In the film Superman Returns, the main character has a more divine nature. He is more monophysite, which means Clark in the movie has a human body, but he holds a divine nature. Throughout the movie, he is Clark when he works for the magazine. He is superman when he changes into the Superman costume. He uses the Clark’s body to conceal his divinity. Lois Lane, the women he loves, and all the people who work with him do not know Clark is the Superman. When he is Superman he does not want the other people to notice his human part, he wants the other people to pay attention to his divine part. That means he recognizes himself as a divine. In one clip, when Lois gives interview to Superman and asks him where did he go, Superman answers that he went to his planet, Krypton. This shows that Superman does not see Earth as his own home and has more divine nature. However, in the film Man of Steel, Superman shows more of his Clark’s side, the human side. From the beginning we know that his father sent him to Earth...
