College Freshman Should Not Be Required To Take Classes

Thousands of teens enter college every year, each with different abilities and different majors, so why are they required to take classes that aren’t helpful for their major? College is expensive, and more and more people are attending colleges with a goal of getting a degree, but as a freshman most colleges now a days force them to take required classes, sometimes unnecessary classes. Most of these classes are not prerequisite for their majors, and actually hold students back. College freshman should not be required to take general classes because they do not help them obtain their major, they are paying more money for these, but people think these classes can help if a person is unsure or is 100 percent on what they want to do.

Taking classes that aren’t necessary to obtain your major should not be forced upon incoming college students. At UMD every incoming freshman is required to take a general class like Biology or Basic English, even though they are a majoring in business, …show more content…
All courses in college will require a textbook, loading up on required classes means more textbooks, textbooks are very expensive in college. So that $35,00 tuition, could now change to $40,00 just because you have to buy textbooks for your classes, that you don’t even want to take.If college wasn't already expensive enough you add an extra $5,000, for textbooks. You can’t get a bigger loan you barely have enough to pay for tuition, so now you have to get an on campus job. All of these problems add on, but now with classes, a job, and maybe even a club, how do you make time to study and do your classwork, for classes that you do not want to take but if you don't pass your just restarting and paying even more money. Eventually money can become a big issue with these required classes because students need money and time to put into these classes and sometimes they just don't have
