Comparison Of Odysseus And The Land Of The Sirens

In this particular painting, John William Waterhouse illustrates the moment when Odysseus and his men pass through the land of the Sirens. After examining the painting closely, I noticed a number of things that were significantly different than the original description of the Sirens in the book. I also took time to look at other paintings while comparing and contrasting, which helped me understand this piece a lot better. According to the book, The Odyssey, while passing through the Sirens, Odysseus was instructed by Circe to plug his men’s ears with wax and have his men bind him to the mast of the ship so that they could pass through the Sirens’ land and survive. The painting by Waterhouse, displayed a very similar scenario, but drifted away a little bit from the physical description in the book. While looking at the painting, we can see that the scene, in general, is the same, with Odysseus bound to the mast and his men’s ears covered in wax, but a few things stood out to me as I further examined it. Homer didn’t give Waterhouse much to work with as far as physical description of the Sirens, but I think …show more content…
According to Homer, the number of Sirens described by Circe to Odysseus was two, but in the painting by Waterhouse, there were seven. In my opinion, he did this to show how much power the Sirens actually have. When Homer describes the Sirens, he focuses mainly on their singing voices instead of their physical appearance. He goes in depth about how their voices give them power over Odysseus, but for the most part he focuses on describing the singing voices and potential harm instead of the real danger the situation puts them in. With the increased number of Sirens, the painting shows that they have a lot of potential in regards to overpowering Odysseus and his men, not only with their singing voices, but their strength as

...states: “O Brother, Where Art Thou? is a Homeric journey through Mississippi during the Depression (Ebert, Roger 2000).” The film itself depicts the obstacles and fate of a man during the Great Depression who escapes from jail and whose only goal is to make it back home. The struggles he and his fellow escapees meet along the way are strikingly similar to the perils that face Odysseus and his men on their mission to get back to Ithaca. Also, the character references in the film that parallel the characters in the epic poem are abundant. The film is almost a modern homage to the ancient poem in all the different ways it emulates “The Odyssey.” To fully understand all of the different ways the film relates to the poem, it is important to establish the character comparisons between the two works. The central theme of Zeus’s rule is the preservation of his “ oikos” or household management where the prevalence of order over Chaos is of utmost importance. In this paper, using the Odyssey as a case study, I will examine the thematic importance of the decisions taken by a hero in accordance to or defiance of self control and pietas and the consequences they lead to. These expectations are clearly marked out for the reader who waits in anticipation to garner the fate of the hero. I will analyse the themes of self control and pietas or duty in the Odyssey and discuss their special significance in this epic.
