Anonymous Donor Saves Shelters
English 112
Professor Tara Ciccarone
DeVry University

Two women’s shelter that have basically been on life support for nearly two decades are now fighting to keep their doors open as more and more debt piles up. On Wednesday, October 16th, 2013, Clara Kirk, a 72-year old woman, said she was having difficulties paying for two different gas and water bills at her shelters that she runs to provide for women and children in need. One of the bills was roughly $21,000 and another bill was around $11,000 (Hutson, 2013). Due to the fact that she was unable to take care of those bills, the gas was shut off on Wednesday, October 16, 2013. This left all of the helpless people without heat or hot water which forced them to go to nearby cafeterias so they could get cleaned up.
Clara’s Place, which houses 19 women and children, is one of the two shelters that have run out of gas. The other shelter – Clara’s House – also has approximately 40 women and is also in devastating financial misfortune. Both of these shelters have struggled financially in recent years, facing punishments from the town for building code violations and consequences from the IRS for being overdue on their payroll taxes (Hutson, 2013).
With temperature going below 30 degrees, residents of both of these shelters finally had something be happy for. An anonymous donor has contributed a rather large sum of money in order to keep the gas successfully running at the two Chicago shelters (Garcia, 2013). The anonymous individual that has paid these gas bills has saved both of Clara’s shelters from being uninhabitable. All of their services were restored on Friday October 25th, 2013.
Now that the gas has been turned back on, the 61 women and 23 children that reside at Clara’s Place and House no longer have to go to neighboring cafeterias to wash up or rely on space radiators and extra bedspreads to stay warm at night.

Clara said that it absolutely destroyed her heart when she had to leave the shelter every day to go to her own home where she has heat and hot water. “I have babies here that are as young as 4 months old, and these women depend on me to provide a home for them.” (Hutson 2013).
The donator that came forward and offered to lend a hand would like to remain anonymous. If his identity was made public, I’m positive several women and children would want to thank him in person. With that being said, everyone that’s involved in these shelters is very pleased the gas has been turned back on - especially since it's extremely cold outside here in Chicago.
The women and children who live day and night at Clara’s Place are very happy and thankful for the anonymous donor that helped pay for both of the gas bills. Kirk has also received several offers from other nameless individuals that have offered to help Clara with writing her grants so that she could reestablish her source of money.
With the help of all of these mysterious people, Clara Kirk is able to take care of all the women and children that are in need. Board members said more fundraisers are being planned for Clara’s organizations so she can prevent another tragedy.
The board members have also articulated their thankfulness to the anonymous donor and all of the other supporters. “We are so thankful to those who gave from their hearts,” said Clara Kirk (Sfondeles, 2013).
On Monday, November 4th, 2013, Clara Kirk was honored by the Illinois African American Families Commission for her nearly thirty years of work as a shelter operator for homeless women and children. The commission provided Kirk with a certification of gratitude for “never giving up even when things looked bleak,” said Michael Homes, executive director of the commission. “This is a very special occasion because today we are here to honor someone who has been a jewel to the Englewood community for more than 26 years,” Homes said during a ceremony at the west Englewood United Organization. (Hutson, 2013)
Although Clara loves the recognition, she said she’d rather be receiving donations from the public. “These women need bed sheets, towels, cleaning supplies, blankets, and most important, we need meats.” “We will accept canned goods, dry goods, and any other food donations.”
In spite of the lack of proper funding over the previous couple of years in order to keep her shelters up to the building codes requirements and issues with the IRS, Clara has insisted that the shelters must continue being open and able to assist people in need. Simply put, donor’s donations are extremely helpful for people in need, especially in today’s economy. “One way or another, God will make a way for us, he has kept us open and safe all this time, and I know he will continue to provide for us,” added Clara (Hutson, 2013).

In creating the brand of you, how do you decide what to tell, how to tell it, and what to leave out? If given the task of introducing your personal brand through writing, what specific characteristics or attributes of yourself would you share? What stories would serve to provide the greatest impact? What memories would be the most telling in introducing who you are? Though we’ll work to answer these questions throughout the week, let's do a concrete exercise to get started: First, in seven words, tell us who you are and what you do. Try to draft a phrase that serves as our introduction to you (see examples below). Place this phrase in the subject line of your response post and then provide us with details to show us how this title represents your personal brand. Using vivid, concrete, descriptive words, share an example, anecdote, or scenario that brings your personal brand to life for your audience and provides an impression of who you are. ...Eng 112-online | A Mandatory Oath Within the Dental Field | Persuasive Final Essay | | AnnaMarie Lopez | 6/17/2010 | A Mandatory Oath Within the Dental Field The Health Care profession is a rapidly growing industry with the dental field as a major part. It is often difficult to select a personal dental office from the many that are available based not only on skill, but honesty and integrity from the entire staff. All dental professionals should be required to take an oath of ethics and professionalism to ensure this professionalism. This can be beneficial for several reasons, but most importantly, to allow patients to feel more comfortable and confident in the choice they have made to entrust a dental office. Patient care should always be the main focus of any practice. Many staff members throughout the dental office are responsible for providing this. Most offices consist not only of a Dentist, but also an assistant who is commonly referred to as an RDA, CDA or DA. These vary from Registered Dental Assistant, to Certified Dental Assistant to Dental Assistant and differ based upon allowable duties or functions they are able to perform. To become “registered” or “certified”, successful completion of an exam is required, however an oath is not. These assistants often work directly with the patients just as much as the dentist, if not more. To ensure assistants also maintain patient care as a priority, the requirement...

Nowadays, cosmetic surgery has become more popular for modern people. Some people believe that it is a science to increase the beauty of a person. The basic aim of this surgery is to enhance the appearance of the individual by altering the parts of the body. As quoted in a journal published the “Surgeons sometimes suspect their patients are trying to solve emotional problems by altering their bodies (Gimlin)”. However, there are people who disagree and don’t believe cosmetic surgery will help people improve self-esteem. Cosmetic surgery should not be encourage for normal people unless it is used to correct health related issues. The simple reason is because there are high risks associated to cosmetic surgeries. ...Informative Essay Eng. 112 AUG 24, 2011 Rome: A City Drenched in Ruin and Splendor “Ah! The aroma of ‘Roma-the Eternal City!” Rome, known as the Eternal City even among the ancient Romans themselves, was so called because the Roman people thought that no matter what happened to the world, no matter how many other empires might rise and fall, Rome would go on forever (4Information.com). Indeed, Rome is over three thousand years old and has been the center of the universe for most of those years; it is also the home to the Pope where he is known as the “Bishop of Rome.” “For those who have visited her, it is unquestionably the most magnificent city in the world. Like the memory of a lost love, she will haunt you, stealing your senses one by one while hastening your return. For those who have not yet experienced her magic, the thrill awaits… (Roman Homes Website)” Rome is one of the most ancient and mystifying cities, full of majesty and splendor because it is a place of myth, antiquity, and spectacle. Rome is a city full of legend, history, and wonder. Its history includes classical myths of vengeful gods, blatant foolishness of Roman emperors, Bacchanalian excess around Renaissance courts while fast-forwarding to pompous Fascism during the reign of Mussolini in the twentieth century. Emperors, Popes and dictators have been at the forefront of domestic and international battles as they stamped out heresies while crushing infiltrating foes. As legend goes, Rome...

...Professor: Mary Elizabeth Holmes Eng. 112 Persuasive essay November 10, 2012 Abortion "It's easier to kill you than to raise you.” Is the main ideology and way of thinking behind women who choose to abort her baby and a pro- chose advocate groups who support abortion. Even though abortion looks like a controversial issue in terms of women’s right, we should see the issue in terms of the right to life too. Different Medical evidences show us the fetus even as a single cell is the basic structure for a human being. If we respect the right to live for every one; by any means we should not justify the murder of fetus as a right, no matter how old the fetus is. Many countries also define abortion as an illegal practice, and almost all religions don’t allow it to their followers to practice abortion. If we see abortion from every single direction it is immoral; so by any means abortion can be legal and justified as right. If killing the fetus is legal, killing the human being is legal too. I don’t see any difference between babies exist in his mother womb, and the one who get outside the womb. If we are not allowed to kill the actual children, so why we justify to kill the fetus inside his mother’s womb? It is unreasonable to approve the killing of human being simply because the baby developing inside the womb rather than outside the mother. As we all know the new born child does not look like exactly adult person;...

Everyone uses water daily, in homes, in businesses, on lawns, and for consumption. Water is an essential part of all of our lives, without it we would not survive. Our water sources however, cannot say the same. Water that was once plentiful is now in short supply and no one ever stops to think why. We just continue to use and use like our water is limitless. The Odyssey

...Kendra Perkins Matt Fox Eng 112 14 December 2011 The Odyssey: Comparison of Genders in Greek Mythology The Odyssey by Homer may be seen by many as a heroic story of a man on his journey home; however, there is an underlying story of the trials in the roles of men and women and the relationships between them. Men and women are portrayed differently in Greece, as in other societies. Men are considered to be the more powerful of the two and are responsible for the protection of their home. Women, on the other hand, are thought to care for the children and are also responsible for the supervision of both the interior and exterior of the home while the men are away. As a man, Odysseus showed great leadership in the war at Troy and was considered the hero at the Trojan War. His wife Penelope, on the other hand, exemplified the role of a woman and leadership in her daily duties of caring for the home and all of their possessions within. In her attempts to do so, she was overcome by suitors and was unable to stop them from partaking of all of their meat and drinks. This essay will explain the underlying roles of men and women in ancient Greece as well as modern day. The beginning of the novel takes place in Ithaka at the home of Odysseus. Suitors have overrun his home in the pursuit of marrying his “widow” Penelope. Telemakhos, son of Odysseus, felt it was a shame that these men would come into their home and eat and drink their house empty. Athena, daughter of Zeus, came to Telemakhos...

...ork2012 - 2013 Catalog A Message from the President “Sullivan University is truly a unique and student success focused institution.” I have shared that statement with numerous groups and it simply summarizes my basic philosophy of what Sullivan is all about. When I say that Sullivan is “student success focused,” I feel as President that I owe a definition of this statement to all who are considering Sullivan University. First, Sullivan is unique among institutions of higher education with its innovative, career-first curriculum. You can earn a career diploma or certificate in a year or less and then accept employment while still being able to complete your associate, bachelor’s, master’s or doctoral degree by attending during the day, evenings, weekends, or online.
