Discrimination Worksheet

Write a 100- to 200-word response to each of the following questions. Provide citations for all the sources you use.

• What is discrimination? How is discrimination different from prejudice and stereotyping?
Discrimination,” is the unjust or prejudicial treatment of different categories of people or things, especially on the grounds of race, age, or sex.” (Dictionary.com) Discrimination is different from prejudice and stereotyping because, discrimination is when you act on your stereotypes and treat others unequally due to your prejudice opinions, whereas being prejudice and having stereotypes, you sort of hang on to your opinions and not act upon your opinions. It is possible to have stereotypes and not be discriminating as long as your opinions don’t make you act a certain way towards an individual for whatever the reason.

• What are the causes of discrimination?
People are taught to act a certain way growing up. Someone who is racist, and has kids, is most likely to rub off on their children and cause them to have similar views. We as people are subjected to change all around us. For most, being different or something unfamiliar to us is scary, so we tend to avoid change and stick with the familiar. We are ignorant by doing this because we will never learn something new without change. We form opinions based on assumption. We need to walk as an example to our children and show them that being different is ok.

• How is discrimination faced by one identity group (race, ethnicity, religious beliefs, gender, sexual orientation, age, or disability) the same as discrimination faced by another? How are they different?
Discrimination is the same between all the groups because it doesn’t allow opportunities or equal rights to individuals of a group, but the circumstances are different.

How is discrimination different from prejudice and stereotyping? Disrimination means to single out an individual or group based on either race, age, gender, or religion. “Bias or prejudice resulting in denial of opportunity, or unfair treatment regarding selection, promotion, or transfer.”( www.businessdictionary.com/discrimination ) The way discrimination is different from stereotyping is because when you stereotype an individual or group you make exaggerating comments about that particular group or person for example saying all white people are uncaring or stating all children are loud and abnoxious. This might fit some individuals characteristics but it would be stereotyping the whole group if stating everyone of that age or race acted the same. Discrimination differs from prejudice slightly because being prejudice means to not associate yourself with a particular race, age, or gender or not like them just because of those rason but to discriminate against people of different age, race, or gender would be to not allow them to work in a specific atmosphere or allow them to have the same opportunity for a promotion as a person of a different race, age, or gender. • What are the causes of discrimination? There are multiple reasons why one might be discriminated...

Provide citations for all the sources you use. * What is discrimination? How is discrimination different from prejudice and stereotyping? Discrimination differs from prejudice and stereotyping in a way that discrimination is not just negative attitudes that reject an entire group, like what prejudice is. However, according to Schaefer (2012), discrimination is the rejection of opportunities and rights to individuals and/or groups because of prejudice or personal reasons. ("Discrimination"). Discrimination also has cumulative effect so that people today are victims of past and current differential practices. However stereotyping is the unreliable generalizations about all members of a particular group without considering individuals differences. In a way, people are doing all three without realization. Everyone naturally has biases which can include stereotyping and prejudice. However when you act upon these or promote the concepts then that is discrimination. * What are the causes of discrimination? Discrimination is often based on ignorance, stereotypical viewpoints, and fears. For example, wealth discrimination is fueled by people living in separate communities and therefore not...

How is discrimination different from prejudice and stereotyping? Discrimnation according to google search. It means, " the unjust or prejudicial treatment of different categories of people or things. when it comes to certain groups. example; race, age, sex." For me prejudice to me is like looking at a persons judgmental negative point of view on a group of people. Stereotyping is what you do when you meet someone for the first time, its like the saying the first impression on someone is the lasting impression. Stereotyping can also be a negative thing as well depending on a certain thing or situation. When I see discrimination I try not to say anything because you never know what a person can do, you don't know if that person is going to flip out on you or not. Also with discrimination it is like taking away the right away from someone. What are the causes of discrimination? To me with discrimination you can view it in different ways, but from what I learned its the human behavior that a person has towards another person, It could be because they are white or black, arab or jewish or indian. It can also be because that of a person race, religion, sex, age, what they wear, what disability that they have, how they look or what. But the reasonable answer on why discrimination is cause...

How is discrimination different from prejudice and stereotyping? “Discrimination is the denial of opportunities and equal rights to individuals and groups because of prejudice or for other arbitrary reasons” (Schaefer, 2012). If you are denied something, purly based ony our appearance or background you are being discriminated against. In life everyone is biased to something they have been taught, it might be race, gender, anything that might make someone different from them. The differences with discrimination verses prejudice and stereotyping is that Prejudice is the bias created throughtout life with steotyping or built in prejudices, but applying or acting on those beleifs and thoughts are what makes discrimination different. If you have someone who has been taught something their entire life but never acts on it or really expresses it you might just consider them prejudice based on the stereotypes they have been taught from their surroundings. Sterotyping is the thoughts and opinions from a first impression, and could be subject to change. Prejeduce is more deep routed in your personal beliefs. What is gender? What is sex in biological terms? Are gender and sex the same thing? Explain why or why not? According to World Health Organization (2014), “‘Gender’ refers to the socially constructed roles, behaviours, activities, and attributes that a given society considers appropriate for men and women” (para.3). Gender is in fact a social construct, designed to allow us to categorize and identify people by a group of emotional traits, behaviors, and stereotypes. These groups are often assumed to correspond with physical characteristics such as long or short hair, pectoral muscles or breasts, or penis or vagina. Biologically, sex is the possession of male and female reproductive organs, or more specifically, XX chromosomes for women and XY chromosomes for men. According to World Health Organization (2014), “Some examples of sex characteristics: women menstruate while men do not, men have testicles while women do not, women have developed breasts that are usually capable of lactating, while men have not, and men generally have more massive bones than women” (para.2). ...Week 9 Final Assignment ETH/125 October 12, 2013 Dr. Regina Pacheco, Ed.M., PhD. Week 9 Final Assignment My experience in this Culture Diversity course has given me a new insight and thought provoking information that has helped me to relate and understand diversity in a new and different way than I had before. Diversity can be such an interesting topic. When one mentions the word “diversity” several things come to mind. An most often, the first thing that comes to mind is the diverse culture, right here in America. To gain a better understanding of all the different cultures around the World. A person could spend their lifetime traveling around the world, from one culture to another. Why do that? When all one has to do is sit back and take in the daily occurrences and experience everything around them. Right here in America. It is hard to find a country more culturally diverse than our very own, and yet we fail to see it. There are several reasons why one could fail to see all this diversity, whether it be a lack of understanding or just a lack of willingness to understand. For a country that is called “the melting pot” (Schaefer, 2012, p.24), we certainly still have a prevalent degree of prejudice and discrimination. Some would call it a lack of insight and willingness to grow, I prefer to call it ignorance and fear. Fear of differences and change. Diversity is the inclusion of different types of people from different races and culture in a group of organization...
