Fluency Classroom Strategies Fluency is one of the major components of the literacy foundations because it provides a correspondence between word recognition and comprehension. In the field of education, there are various strategies that help students improve fluency while reading. Depending on the approach a teacher decides to use for teaching fluency, the methods, materials, and instruction time may vary depending the students. As a teacher it is important to provide students with as many opportunities to read as possible. Therefore, a teacher must have the ability to determine what students should be reading and provide time for reading aloud. Regardless of the approach one pursues, oral reading, choral reading, and audio-assisted reading …show more content…
Additionally, this type of reading provides a model of fluent reading as students read along and helps improve their ability to read sight words. Because students are reading aloud together, students who may generally feel self-conscious or nervous about reading aloud have built-in support to increase their confidence. In addition, using choral reading provides less skilled readers with the opportunity to practice and receive support before being required to read on their own. Patterned or predictable texts are beneficial for choral reading because their repetitious style encourages students to join in. Apart of the reading can include the teacher reading along to assist in setting the pace, as well as modeling proper pronunciation. Repetition readings may be especially well suited to rhymes, poetry, and lyrics. Choral reading is similar to partner reading because both provide assistance for less able readers to receive support in their reading. Therefore, having the ability to read aloud effectively and fluently is a very difficult skill to obtain. Choral reading can cause performance anxiety among students of all ages. However, when students participate in group reading activities, students can receive the practice they need without having to feel anxious or embarrassed about their reading ability. Students then read the same text without the assistance of the audio recording. This method of learning fluency is used as a confidence and reading skills developing activity. In addition, it helps to build proper phrasing, expression, sight word recognition, and comprehension skills. When students are given the opportunity to listen to an audio reading it allows them to hear the tone and pace of a skillful reader. Audio-assisted reading is a flexible strategy that can be used across content areas. This assisted reading method of reading along while listening to a fluent model has become an increasingly popular method due to the improvement of availability and quality of audiobooks (Esteves & Whitten, 2011). Over the past decade, the quality of audiobooks has also improved because audiobook publishers have recruited professional actors and trained orators who have the ability to read with engaging expression that captivates listeners with their vivid storytelling (Esteves & Whitten, 2011). Instructional time for audio-assisted reading is important because it must be used in the most efficient manner possible for students to receive a beneficial experience.
