Overarching Rationale of the Package
Media, as interwoven with everyday lives, insinuate their messages into people’s mindset at every turn, making it one of the most pervasive and powerful means of influencing one’s ideologies towards men and women, and the respective gender roles. Notwithstanding, in real practice, media usually communicate images of the sexes which may perpetuate unrealistic, stereotypical, and limiting perceptions in the target recipients.

Since adolescents have been regularly and extensively exposed to these types of media, this kit therefore aims at educating the young people in our society, as the starting point, to address the issue of gender dignity in earnest, so as to promote a more caring and healthier society. …show more content…
The two lessons, in similar vein, will intensify the study of gender stereotyping and portrayal of female gender in Hong Kong media; in particular analyzing their most commonly used tactics to induce target recipients the characteristics, personalities, and attributes of masculinity and femininity. Particularly, the two lessons will analyze and discuss in what ways do local print media (e.g. advertisements, magazine covers, and news) containing sexist imagery or content, convey and promote gender inequality and sexual …show more content…

Regarding criticality, critical thinking is one of the generic skills in the NSS curriculum in Hong Kong. The training of media literacy is rooted in critical thinking ability, hence this kit will provide assessment scheme specifying students’ critical thinking into testable abilities and skills, with the purpose to:

i. include reflections on media strategies placed within reasoning;

ii. problematize the frozen ideologies and power relations embedded in media gendered messages

Teaching & Learning Activities

To accommodate these rationale and aims, Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) will be employed in this package to facilitate discourse and differentiate student learning, in relation to the intended and unintended messages sent by print media. Both micro (language use, discourse, verbal interaction, imagery communication) and macro level (social power, male dominance, and gender inequality) would be included in the analysis. Three key strategies will be utilized to analyze media discourse at classroom
