How To Read Lit Like A Professor Analysis

In class on Friday we were given time to design something that represented the sonnet When I consider how my light it spent. Before we analyzed this sonnet we were assigned the reading If it's a Square its a Sonnet, From How to Read Lit Like a Professor.

I liked the comparison that I was able to make between this chapter and our class discussion of five paragraph essays. The idea is that an essay or a sonnet begins within a simple format. From this simple form the piece of writing is able to grow as the writer expands his or her thoughts. When I visualize this I see a box that is plain to represent the simplicity. From this box I see pieces that are subtracted from some part and the added to another; leaving a shape that resembles a square that has been improved.

I grabbed wire because I can twist in and make it into almost anything, I used the glass stones to represent the holy figure in the poem, and the key acted as the speakers answer that is hidden inside the poem.

My final project.

Everything in my design has meaning, and was placed with intention. The green wire is twisted into a box to represent the structure of the sonnet. I used the red wire to represent the volta that appears in the poem about halfway. Both of these pieces represent something structurally, the structure of the poem is unique to it being a sonnet.

The key was the next part that held importance. It's meant to represent a solution, I didn't want the solution to be touching the bottom or top because the solution wasn't found in either of those places in the poem. So I suspended the key so that some of it was appearing above the volta and some of it after. The speakers answer was found within himself, and also around the center of the poem, because of this I decided that the best visual representation of this would be in the center of the piece.

He doesn’t state anything about her that isn’t true, yet he portrays her exactly as she is, his true love. Even though he is commenting on her flaws he does it in a relaxed tone. This makes the poem pleasant to read and helps to see it for what it truly means. Shakespeare’s diction has plenty of attitude by describing beautiful and wonderful things, then he states that she is the total opposite of them.
