Dec. 2012: Background Information on the Organisation

Cloud Hotels, PLC, owns more than 60 hotels throughout the United Kingdom. Despite the current economic climate they recently acquired a small hotel chain headquartered in Spain. Cloud’s chief executive decided that half of the new hotels in Spain would be retained and rebranded as part of the Cloud Hotels Group; the other half will be sold. This will support Cloud’s strategic objective of growing the organisation slowly to make sure that new ventures are well supported and opened on time and on budget.

Cloud’s hotels are considered budget accommodations; they are functional, clean and reasonably priced.
Most guests stay for one to three nights and are a combination of business and leisure travelers. The hotels are typically situated in urban locations that are easily accessible by public transport. Tourists are attracted to these hotels in popular visitor destinations where the many local attractions mean that they will not be spending much time in their hotel rooms. The organisation has decided to use an ethnocentric approach and send some of their existing UK-based managers to Spain to lead the changeover of the new hotels and then manage them after they re-open. If this new overseas venture is

Carlson Companies

... By: _______________ CIS 505 Professor: _________________ _____________ University May 23, 2013 Assess how the Carlson SAN approach would be implemented in today’s environment. Like many IT staff faced with exponential storage growth, Norman Owens realized a few years back that his company was headed for a challenge if it did not start consolidating its storage resources onto a storage area network (SAN). Owens, a storage network engineer and consultant with Carlson Companies, spoke to an audience of his peers at Storage Decisions 2003 recently about his company's consolidation efforts. (While not necessarily a household name, Carlson Companies is an international presence behind such well-known retail and hotel chains as TGI Friday's and Radisson hotels and resorts. Before consolidating onto a SAN, Owens' shared services group supported a configuration with one mainframe and 26 servers, where most of the servers were hard at work supporting the company's Oracle Financials database under HP/UX. This arrangement handled 14TB of data, over 54 SCSI and 8 ESCON connections. "It looked like a point-to-point SCSI solution," Owens said, noting, "There were a whole lot of cables." When they needed more storage, "We'd just go buy another frame. After the company asked his group to take on more responsibilities for its global IT storage operations, Owens and his coworkers decided now was the time to look at a more consolidated approach. Enter the company's current storage over...

MESOPAUSE | Thermosphere | Increase in temperature from the absorption of UV radiation | Greatest amount of energy coming into the atmosphere is from insolation (short wave solar radiation). The amount of this energy from the sun is determined by: *Solar constant- varies slightly & affects longer term climate rather than short term *Distance from the sun- Earth’s orbit around sun can cause variation in distant *Altitude of the sun in the sky- equator receives more energy as rays are head on. At 60 degrees N or S its at an angle so there’s twice the area to heat up & more atmosphere to pass through *Length of the day & night Some radiation is absorbed by ozone, water vapour, co2, ice particles, and dust reduce the amount reaching Earth. & clouds also reflect radiation back! ALBEDO is the ratio between the amount of incoming and reflected radiation. (Usually at 4%) Short wave radiation is converted to heat and heats the surface of earth, while longer radiation (infrared) is radiated back into atmosphere. The technologies that will be discussed will range from hardware and software requirements for weather, flight planning, crew scheduling and maintenance operations. To begin we will examine the flight planning system known as Jeppesen Flite Star IFR which is considered one of the world's leading desktop flight planning technologies. It includes advanced features and innovations such as Vector Plus mapping technology and vector chart themes, which offer low and high altitude en-route chart emulations as well as user-customizable charts which includes all of the complexities involved in the planning of a typical commercial airline flight from the aspect of the flight operations dispatcher. Next as we continue we will turn the discussion to crew scheduling which will lead us to Flight Pak which provides management with aircrew scheduling in both local and ZULU times. The discussion will point to how the system will provide more accuracy in the scheduling...
