...career as a reader, I have read many books from when I was a kid to the present. I have read many different types of books including children’s books, comic books, drama books, adventure books, autobiographies, fiction and nonfiction. In my career as a reader, my reading experiences as a child, my favorite book as a child and the books I read in grade 9 have influenced my reading career. My reading experiences as a child are one of the three things that have influenced my reading career. When I was very little and had a hard time reading, before I would go to bed my mom or dad would read me a story. The books were about 15 pages long and were an adventure story. My mom and dad read books to be almost every day of the week and sometimes on the weekends. When I was able to read all by myself I got a library card so I could sign out books that I wanted to read by myself. I usually signed out either sports books or adventure books. These books were usually fiction. At school there were times where we could read, so I read a lot at school. My favorite book as a child is the second thing that has impacted my reading career. As a child I would read a lot of different kinds of books, but one of my favorite book series as a child was the books Brady Brady. When I was growing up as a kid I loved to play hockey. ...literacy was not an issue that concerned me. I did not especially like reading, but it was a normal part of school so I just did as I was told. It was not until a school program called “Book It” came to my school that I realized being literate is not only important, but that reading can also be fun and actually exciting. I grew up more concerned with how my recent baseball game went or what I was going to do with my guy friends on the weekend. “Book It” taught me not only to enjoy reading but respect the opportunity to get to read whenever I wanted. My outlook on reading completely changed when I was in elementary school. I was coaxed into reading by being rewarded pizza if I read so many books. Since then I have realized the value of being literate and how important it is to not only myself, but to society as a whole to be able to pick up a book, read, and comprehend what the author has laid out before us. Perhaps you are not familiar with the “Book It” program, so laying some groundwork is important. The basic concept of the program is that reading a designated amount of books (during my years in the program it was ten books) equated into receiving a free personal pizza at Pizza Hut. I was always up for anything, but when she started reading the book each day I found myself not even listening to what she was saying. This book was written by Karen Beaumont. This book can be used in many ways to support intellectual growth. It can be used to support prediction. You can encourage the children to predict by asking open ended questions like “how do you think Mom will feel when she see’s that she painted on the walls” or “where do you think she will paint next”? This book is also great for working on rhyming words and rhythm. The second book I picked is “Wemberly Worried” written by Kevin Henkes. I picked this book for the many activities and conversations you can have within the subject. Two of the ways this book will support their intellectual growth would be in feelings, communication and self-regulation. Most children can relate to being worried. In kindergarten many children are still working on describing and recognizing feelings beyond the basic happy, sad and mad. The third book I would use is “Countdown to Kindergarten” by Alison Mcghee. This book would be wonderful all year but also in the fall when children can relate to counting down to starting Kindergarten. ...Host ‘The Host’ was a very interesting novel to read and discuss. Reading the novel made me think of how someone could portrait the scenes in a movie or a visual act. Therefore, watching the movie made things even more interesting. The novel had quite a few scenes that could have been shown in the movie and made the movie more like the book. Also, changes of character appearance really changed and got some focused off the movie. One of the main character difference that I found interesting was the Seeker. The Seeker from the movie was not what I expected after reading the novel. While reading a novel I always have interesting thoughts such as, what if there was a movie that portrayed this book? Would all the scenes be shown on the movie or would they take some out? Would the characters look the way they are described?
