Diversity: the range of differences [age, gender, social, cultural, language ethnic] within a population. Diversity is the unique characteristics of an individual that makes them different to others. When in contact with people as a care professional, such as colleagues, service users, their families, and adults who come from a wide range of social, cultural, language and ethnic backgrounds as well as men, women and people who are able and unable. Every person should be treated with respect, treated fairly and equally without being judged on their language, different cultural traditions, whether they are middle class, working class, black, white or mixed race. The needs of the individual should be valued and respected.
Equality: treating a person fairly or in a way that ensures they are not disadvantaged. In the care setting, service users need to be treated equally and fairly, this does not mean that everyone should be treated the same, but means that peoples different needs, wishes and preference are taken in to consideration when providing care. It is important to promote social inclusion in the health and social care settings as it works hard to identify and remove barriers to access and participation. It enables people to use the full range of services and facilities. It welcomes and values everyone by supporting those who use the care setting. Heath and social care settings need to be honest and reflective about how their work force operates, to be critical in a constructive way in order to make positive changes, care practitioners should identify actual barriers to access and participation and remain alert to potential problems which might exclude some people.
