...EMPIRICAL ANALYSIS OF CHARACTERISTICS ASSOCIATED WITH ACCOUNTING INTERNSHIPS James H. Thompson Associate Professor of Accounting Central Washington University 2400 S. 240th Street, Des Moines, WA 98198, USA. Phone: 206-439-3800 x3839 E-mail: jht@cwu.edu Abstract Internships are a popular element used to enhance accounting education. Although previous studies have considered internships, many have addressed enhancement of subsequent academic and professional performance. The purpose of this paper is broader and examines several characteristics of accounting internships: the frequency of participation, eligibility requirements, process for securing internships, level of participation, availability and amount of academic credit, area of assignments, nature of post-internship requirements, and benefits to students. Two random samples, one in 1998 and one in 2003, of 100 accounting programs were analyzed in the study. For each program selected, the survey was mailed to accounting program administrators. Responses were collected by fax. The results of this study should be of interest to accounting students, faculty program administrators, and practitioners. Gaining real-life knowledge of accounting tasks and obtaining insight regarding career planning were the two most important benefits identified. Future research should consider the perceptions of accounting students and practitioners. Introduction Internships are a popular element of accounting education. Supervised practical...

Job Satisfact

...Job Satisfaction and Job Performance at the Internship Level Miles Smayling Minnesota State University, Mankato Howard Miller Minnesota State University, Mankato Industrial psychologists and management theorists have been examining the linkage between job satisfaction and job performance for at least fifty years. The results have been, at best, tenuous. The effects of age, gender, personality and environment have been considered without yielding concrete resolution. Since an internship or similar work integrated learning experience might well be a career starting point, a study was conducted to determine what, if any, relationship exists between satisfaction and performance at this stage. Assessment of job performance for student interns is an accepted practice for work integrated learning operations. This paper examines the results of 359 internships over a period of years. Consideration was given to the gender of the intern and their supervisor and the key factors that interns and their supervisors tended to focus on in their evaluations. Gender did not seem to play a role in the students’ view of the value of various work characteristics. The effect of moderating variables were considered when examining the satisfaction-performance relationship. Although the use of such moderators did alter the results, their effect was fairly small and did not have a meaningful impact on the conclusions drawn. A clear finding emerged suggesting that job satisfaction is more highly related...

A Critical Reflection of the Value of Work Placements

...Placements Word Count: 967 An internship is a directed, practical learning experience, outside of the normal classroom setting, in which students sharpen skills, gain experience through work on advanced productions, apply classroom learning to professional settings or projects, and learn first-hand how professional companies or organizations operate (Palomar College, 2005). It is generally know that many universities offer sandwich degree courses and this paper will critically examine the value of work placements undertaken by universities students. The popularity of work placements and internship has grown in the recent years as young graduates found it hard to secure a job. In 2011 UK government offered ‘youth contract’ to help young people getting jobs and this was initiated when youth unemployment has hit a record high, with more than one million young people out of work in the UK, and applicants far outweighing the number of entry-level and graduate vacancies ( Bennetts and Emilie, 2011 ). There are a number of benefits of work placements to both students and organisation offering internships. According to Gazzard (2011), ‘Placements can provide industry with a cost-effective labour pool and develop a pipeline of motivated and competent future employees.’ An article published in Hispanic Engineer & Information Technology (2013) states that internship experience not only benefits the company that a student work for, but internships give students an opportunity to...

...Issue: 1 Article: 13 ISSN 1309-6249 THE POTENTIAL BENEFITS AND CHALLENGES OF INTERNSHIP PROGRAMMES IN AN ODL INSTITUTION: A CASE FOR THE ZIMBABWE OPEN UNIVERSITY Richard BUKALIYA Zimbabwe Open University, Mashonaland East Region, Marondera, ZIMBABWE ABSTRACT Several studies done elsewhere have indicated and concluded that a gap really exists between the quality of graduates produced and what the market demands (Mpairwe, 2010). For this and other reasons, training institutions and employers have accepted the need to seek mitigatory steps to bridge the gap. Among other steps, institutions of learning have introduced internship programmes also referred to as field attachment in some of their degree and non-degree programmes. There has also been the realisation that imparting the relevant practical skills is a partnership between the training institution and the prospective employers through student internships. However, despite these positive intentions, interns on field attachment have faced serious challenges among which are insufficient time and lack of funding for the programmes. It is behind this background that the present study sought to establish the benefits and challenges faced by student interns at the Zimbabwe Open University. The study focussed on two of the university`s faculties: the Faculty of Science and technology and that of Applied Social Sciences. Most of the students on internship were from these faculties. Being quantitative in nature, the study employed the...

The banking institution offers a summer internship to bright and driven individuals. The internship includes 14 weeks of very intense training and long hours. Job stress is defined as feeling one’s capabilities, resources, or needs that do not match the demands or requirements of the job (Hitt, Miller, & Colella, 2011 p. 249). Working 70 and 80 hours per week or possibly 120 hours will put a major burden on anyone, especially someone new to the working environment. Audrey is excited with her internship and very eager to learn. She is assigned a mentor and buddy by the business development manager, Kelly Richards. Kelly has 10 years of experience. Although associates consider her human resources, Kelly’s job is strictly administrative. Audrey is never introduced to her mentor and her buddy, Christine Page is very...

Application

...I am applying Business as my major degree this time. Since I am a very energetic and challenging-like person, learning and working in competitive environment are very appealing to me. The reason for applying business major is very simple. It is no doubt that I have huge passion towards business after I took many business-related courses. In addition, I had gotten more familiar with these kinds of stuff after I did some internship, which provided me a very good opportunity to build my confidence in pursuing business-related jobs after college. In particular, I feel interested in real estate, marketing, and finance areas. Not only I have been almost done all the courses in business major requirement, I am participating in JBS Real Estate Development this summer, which gives me a glimpse and affords me a substantial connection between the college and the work after college. Despite what many believe, business is not only about its glossy brochure, its fancy product, and its precise financial report. It extends to its employees, customers, the media and even the general public. Honestly, I am a kind of person who is eager to work with people, communicate with people and even negotiate with people. Last year, I declared Psychology as one of my major and almost done all requirements as so far. I certainly believe that Psychology and Business are a good combination in knowing how to work with people, and how to get into social networks well in the future. Besides my good academic...
