Hi everybody,
After reading Kort (2008) extensive philosophical paper I found myself favouring Ciulia (2002) simple explanation of leadership when speaking of Rost's compilation 'all 221 definitions say the same thing - leadership is about one person getting others to do something.' Not sure of the advantage of the formal standard definition formula. My interpretation of that would be I ( the Hospital Trust) have a O (change that needs to be managed.). A (the influential leader) is required to lead M (the team).
I would disagree with Washbush (2005) and Carrol (2005) when they cite there is no such thing as 'leadership' because it is the same as 'management. In my experience as Yuki (2002) concurs the essence of leadership is influence, which occurs by the use of a different kind of power. Whilst considering my own leadership style a democratic approach is key. Relationships amongst a team are fundamental, characteristics of mutual respect are within are socialisation
I'll have a scan at Zaccaro et al (2001) next! Talk to you later
Jackie

Hi,
Zaccaro et. al. (2001) paper impresses an incite into team leadership and how the sum of the members form a collective. The dynamics of the team must be known to the leader in order to be successful in completing the task. I would agree that a successful leader attributes include knowledge & skills to enhance team performance. The team leader must engage with the members as within the context of functional leadership as many authors describe it. I also agree the responsibility of the leader is to facilitate to allow creativity of its members, empowerment may increase personnel resources and development.
Zaccaro et. al. (2001) model of leadership performance structure provides a useful strategy to enhance team effectiveness. The leadership behaviour dimensions cited by Fleishman et.al (1991) analyses the

...Principles of Leadership Leadership is the action of leading a group of people or an organisation. It is important because the group or organisation takes the personality of the leader and becomes it. There evidence that leadership can maximise productivity, and increase harmony within the group. However to achieve good leadership you must have a good leadership style and good characteristics which will be discussed further on. Styles of Leadership There are several different types of styles of leadership however some of the more popular follow: Democratic Although democratic leaders make the final decision, they take everyone’s ideas on board and involve them in the decision making process. This makes a more effective team and often a better outcome however due to the fact everyone has different opinions and ideas it takes a while for a decision to be made and therefore not so good when there is a crisis. An example of a democratic leader is Bill Gates because he frequently communicates with his employees all over the world by email to discuss new technology and how he can improve the business he runs. Autocratic The autocratic leadership style is seen as “my way or the high way”. This is because these leaders have complete power over their people and quickly act on their own thoughts therefore making decisions quickly. However employees and colleagues feel resentful of their leader due to not being able to voice their thoughts when it could be for the greater...

...Leadership skills Leadership means different things to different people everywhere in the world but Yukl.G (2013) explains that leadership is the art of motivating a group of people to act towards achieving a common goal. In line with this definition Kotter.J (1999) mentioned that leadership is a progression of social inspiration in which a person can procure the aid and support of others in the achievement of a common task. Drawing from the above definitions Northhouse.P (2013) highlights that both definitions on leadership lay emphasize on the importance of inspiration and preparation, although effective leadership is centered on ideas which would not materialize except this ides can be communicated to others effectively in a way that involves them. Gill.R (2006) explains that when leadership or the people in control do not have the appropriate leadership skills there is a drop down effect through the rest of the organization, which can negatively impact the general contentment, success, competence, and productivity of firm, group or team. For example the movie Remember the Titans (2000), were Julius claims that his altitude it’s a reflection on his captain Bertie. As the movie advances, Bertier changes his attitude and leads by example. This simple behavioral change unites an entire team, and changes the ways and attitudes on every level. Although this was a movie, I learnt that it is important for us to understand that as a leader devising an optimistic and high held altitude...

Leadeship

...Team Leadership Memo Phil Jackson Theories of Leadership James Manktelow, (2015): In the 1930s, Kurt Lewin developed a framework based on a leader's behavior. He argued that there are three types of leaders: 1. Autocratic leaders make decisions without consulting their teams. This style of leadership is considered appropriate when decisions need to be made quickly, when there's no need for input, and when team agreement isn't necessary for a successful outcome. 2. Democratic leaders allow the team to provide input before making a decision, although the degree of input can vary from leader to leader. This style is important when team agreement matters, but it can be difficult to manage when there are lots of different perspectives and ideas. 3. Laissez-faire leaders don't interfere; they allow people within the team to make many of the decisions. This works well when the team is highly capable, is motivated, and doesn't need close supervision. However, this behavior can arise because the leader is lazy or distracted; and this is where this style of leadership can fail. Retrieved from http://mindtools.com Goals and Evaluation While working on putting this team together it was important for me to keep the organization’s goals in mind. There is an urgency because our company is trying to tap into a new market. There’s a feeling within our company that we’ve been missing out and it’s our time to see if we can have some gains of our own in a new area for our business...

...Leadership Styles of Northwest Middle School With every education community there are successes and challenges each organization has at its leadership level. The decisions the leadership team makes to help fulfill the school’s vision and counteract these challenges starts with the leadership styles. Northwest Middle School of Kansas city, Kansas has ninety-nine percent free or reduce lunch students, the poorest school in Kansas, and is considered at- risk. Four years ago the school was on the verge of being shut down with a little over two hundred students. Now, the school has six hundred-fifty students, rising test scores, outreach programs to the community, and so much more positive growth. The most recent change in leadership has led to the reformation within Northwest. Taking a look at the leadership styles and theories within Northwest, leadership teams may further help readers understand the reasons that lead to successes at the middle school. The top three leadership styles used are: participant, collaborative, and directive. Each style has similarities, differences, and the best time when it should be used. Participative Leadership There is no perfect school no matter the amount of funding or how high the tests score students may have. However, there...

To Identify Leadeship Style

...Dissertation Synopsis | Topic: To identify Leadership Style and its influence on Team Effectiveness | 11/15/2013 INTRODUCTION LEADERSHIP Leadership style is the manner and the approach of providing direction implementing plans and motivating people.Leadership is just more than science;it is an art as well. The art of leadership varies from leader to leader. Different situations call for different kind of leadership styles. Kurt Lewin led a group of researchers to identify three major styles of leadership. They are: * Authoritarian or Autocratic * Participative or Democratic * Delegative or Free Reign Although effective leaders use all three styles, with one of them normally dominant, most leaders tend to stick with a one style. Some leaders are very task- oriented; they simply want to get things done. Others are very people oriented; they want people to be happy. And others are a combination of two. If you prefer to lead by setting and enforcing tight schedules, you tend to be more production oriented(or task oriented). If you make people your priority and try to accommodate employee needs, then you are more people oriented. TEAM EFFECTIVENESS The other dimension to the study is team effectiveness. According to the team effectiveness model, the following are the factors that affect team effectiveness. Teams can continuously improve their effectiveness by focussing on improving their functioning in five key areas – goals, roles, procedures, relationships...
