DEPRESSION AND WORK FUNCTION

Throughout the nation and our world people are suffering from this disease.Depression effects people of both genders, all ages, and any background. People once believed that teens never went through any form of severe depression. Some still believe this to be true, but if it were why are teens homicidal and suicidal? This report should give support for the fact that a teen’s depression deserves attention, not the shrug of the shoulders or the turn of a back.
Depression is defined as the point or points is ones lifetime when they are mentally unstable and the emotional state marked by sadness, discouragement, and loss that can occur during the teenage years. Depression causes changes in behavior, thinking and especially changes in ones everyday life. “Depression amongst teens generally starts when a child hits puberty, but could possibly begin the day they were born if chemically inbalanced (heredity).” Dr. David Kalkstein, psychiatrist at Penn Foundation. Depression can effect anyone, anytime, and anywhere. Teens, children, and adults are all effected, some even have the same problems in common, the causes too. Depression is experienced mostly by teens even though it is mistakenly classified as an “adult illness”. “Twenty percent of high school students are deeply unhappy or have some kind of psychiatric problem.” The causes for depression in teens are sometimes more harsh than the causes in adults. In a teen’s lifetime they have to face many problems and sometimes they have to face these problems more than once. Teens have to deal with peer pressure problems at school, problems at home, the deaths of loved ones, and if they are already using drugs this could also be a cause. Many teens also have to deal with the point in their life when they wonder if they are attractive to other people, of the opposite sex. If they do believe that

Filipina Is Another Name for Maid by Luisa A. Igloria (Copy)

...THEY SAY FILIPINA IS ANOTHER NAME FOR MAID by Luisa A. Igloria Our Overseas Contract Workers are the new heroes of the Philippines --Fidel V. Ramos In Hong Kong last summer my office mate and I took turns, smiling for pictures in front of "The Court of Final Appeal," as a joke, or maybe in a kind of atonement--because two women boarding the same ferry we took that morning said, in the dialect they were sure we would recognize, Is it your day off too? One of them had a quick, nervous way of smiling, as if ready to take it back if we had turned on them with indignation. The other was clearly ready to challenge, if the well- intentioned expression of solidarity were read otherwise. It was a day filled with rainclouds, a sky the color of aluminum, the dull sheen on the inside of an old rice cooker. Yes, we smiled, it's our day, off too. Is your amo kind? ventured the younger of the two, shyly. Yes, we said, thinking of the air- conditioned offices and computers we had left behind for two weeks of r & r, as we leant back on the green railing. The boat punched forward, toward the red and yellow buildings, the rickshaws lined up in the shade. Mine too, she said; now. But the first one… and her voice trailed like a scarf over the water, hesitating. We had to force our way in, said her friend, picking up the thread. I called the center, you know, the one near the church? Migrante. She was this close to being raped. Did you hear about the...

Reflection of Bonuses in Bad Times

...dilemma is whether to pay the bonuses to the employees during the recession time. The case study “Bonuses in Bad Time” (2012) outlines the circumstance of a supermarket chain. This case serves as an inside look into a grocery retailer——Superado, an expansive market chain situated all over the nation of Spain. Luisa Fernandes is the CEO of Superao; she had to take over the role as CEO after the demise of her dad. She is at present confronted with the issue of paying her worker's rewards amid a poor monetary time. Superado's Vice President of Finance, Maria Alva, makes it very clear with Luisa when she advises her that the organization cannot stand to pay rewards this year due to Spain's subsidence. Rodrigo Mendoza is the Vice President of Human Resources for Superado. He believes that Luisa should pay the bonus, and he has faiths in the workers and trusts that the accomplishment of Superado amid the retreat is because of management commitments. Jorge Ramos is the store manager. Jorge's essential concerns are his employees and the clients of Superado. He needs to demonstrate to Luisa that it is vital to esteem the representatives of Superado. Besides all the perspectives, Luisa must decide whether to pay bonuses this year. The issues for this situation include worker maintenance, Superado’s outer risk, and the bonuses distribution. Advice about that dilemma is given by two experts, Nicolas Hollanders and Marcos Barberan, who are...

...between creating art and deciding what is really important to him. Guido’s obsession with his films but more importantly his obsession with his lifestyle blinds him from reality. Throughout the story the press keep hassling Guido and his wife, Luisa, about the way Guido lives his life. Including his personal life, which entails questions about his mistresses, his progress on his movie, and the relationship between him as his wife. In a scene Luis describes whom her husband really is, and that the press confuses Guido with his work. “My husband makes movies; To make them he lives a kind of dream; In which his actions aren’t always what they seem”, Luisa believes that her husband and his work are confused by the public. When watching the play I was somewhat confused on what side she was on. I couldn’t distinguish the difference between how she felt towards Guido and how she felt towards the press’s thoughts on Guido. I believe though at that point in the play that she was sticking up for him, and she was blinded by what he was really doing. Luisa was making a point that because he makes movies that his lifestyle is acceptable. Compared to contemporary artists and their work I think we do confuse them but in a different way. Luisa stands up for Guido, or what I though she was doing, by saying what he does is acceptable. I think we confuse artists and...

...significant fall in the company’s profit and when the employees did not meet the targets set by their managers. This dilemma is the predicament focus of the case study Bonuses in Bad Time written by Beyersdorfer、Dessain and Ton published in July-August 2012. Luisa Fernandez, the CEO of one of Spain’s largest grocery store Superado, is facing a problem with a deficient profit due to the recession in Spain. Maria Alva, the vice president, had made a difficult discussion with Luisa about not giving the employees a bonus at the end of the year. However, Rodrigo Mendoza, the store manager has a different perspective on the issue. He points out that Superado is not the only company that is facing this problem. It may be too risky to take away the employees bonus for it will affect their enthusiasm. Luisa thinks it is unfair to take away the reward of the employees as it has been a tradition for over 30 years, and she does not want to change the culture. She also believes that although Superado is facing a serious issue with profit, with Superado’s reasonable benefits, the employees would not resign. With Rosa, the sales manger’s suggestion of reducing the range of the products, In order to cut down the budgets, Luisa now needs to hold a meeting with the employees for further discussion about the bonuses...

Costume Design

...When starting to formulate ideas for my costume design for the selected character, Luisa Ruiz, better known as the “Dog Lady”, I skimmed through the text. The text itself included a wide variety of both character and costume descriptions. I found most of my inspiration for my costume design within the stage directions located right above her first lines on page 10 of the actual script. It stated, “She is dressed in a torn, stained, dingy white bathrobe. Although her lips are painted red, her hair not been combed”. Milcha Sanchez-Scott even goes as far as comparing Luisa Ruiz to her messy yard which is over grown with weeds and plants, a strong and explanatory analysis. As costume designer, I respect the ideas and characters of the playwright and wanted to stay true to the descriptions provided, so I designed a costume that used a white, old robe combined with infamous red lipstick. Based on prior encounters with older Hispanic women (I am Cuban), I decided they were prime candidates to model after. I also researched photos online of older women’s dress and items they wear, specifically oversized clothing because older women usually want to be comfortable. I decided to pick from a wide variety of colors for Luisa because she has an extremely vibrant personality. I choose dynamic, solid colors such as red, orange, and green. When put together the colors clash but that is my intention. She is also described as older and tad off the walls so I wanted that to be portrayed in her...

Murder or Suicide?

...ENC 1102 TR 4:00 11 October 2012 Rewrite Murder or Suicide? Once upon a time there was a couple in New York who had two children. The oldest one was Roland, 20 years old, and the youngest one Rosa, 9 years old. Rosa was adopted when she was 3 months old, but she didn’t know. Friends and neighbors thought they were the kind of perfect family, but they didn’t know what they were hiding. The Rodriguez family was marked forever on the 23rd of March, 1994. Something terrible happened, and people couldn’t believe it. Roland decided to kill himself by jumping from the 12th floor of the building they lived at. As he passed by the floor 9, he was accidentally hit by a shotgun that took away his life immediately. Roland didn’t know that three days before, firefighters had installed a safety net by the 8th floor for the workers that were painting the building. So, he was not going to die. Police officers went to the apartment where the shotgun had come out, and a couple that lived there argued that it was an accident because they didn’t see the guy going down the window. An officer asked for an explanation, and the husband, Rodrigo, said, “When I get mad at my wife, I pull the trigger, but the gun is always empty. I don’t know what happened, I didn’t mean to hurt or kill my wife nor anyone. I’m not a murderer.” To the surprise of everyone, the couple was Roland’s parents. Roland, before committing suicide, gave Rosa a letter explaining what he did, and why he couldn’t live anymore...

Love vs. Sex

...Change of Weapons Love vs. Sex Mike Lago Prof. Inestroza ENG210: Latin American Literature February 21st, 2013 Sex, it can be a casual encounter between two people, or it can be that magical moment where two come together and make something more out of their relationship. The science behind it can get far too complicated, but when the sparks fly it is a moment most do not forget. Leading into now the stories written by Luisa Valenzuela. Her female characters all experience sexual encounters one way or another, some much more pleasant then others. The difference of some of their encounters differs greatly though. Some experienced true lovemaking, where emotions soared. Others had a casual encounter where pleasure was the only concern of both parties involved. In the essay, I Am Your Horse in the Night; Luisa Valenzuela tells the story of a young girl who is clearly very much in love with a guerilla fighter in the dirty war in Argentina. When she hears the knock on the door, her stomach drops. Is it really him? Is it her horse in the night? The door opens and there is her horse, with music and drink in hand. Risking everything to come see his true love. He does not fool around at all. He gets right to the point, Chiquita come with me, come to bed with me, he says. Many in our class described their relationship as purely sex. But why? Why would Beto come all the way from Brazil, just to have sex with a girl who he did not even love? To...

Macachu, the Movie

...Two Mothers, One World Chilean women’s societal roles have historically been impacted by traditional gender norms as well as a patriarchal cultural; just as most cultures have. However, throughout the years, Chilean women have proven themselves a force not to be reckoned with by involving themselves more and more into the political world. The film Machuca is a story of national violence and guilt seen through the innocent eyes of a boy named Gonzalo Infante and through him we meet two important women; Silvana and Maria Luisa Infante (IMdB, 2004). Machuca validates the moral crises of Allende’s fall with dramatic force, especially by the women of Chile. Through Gonzalo we witness the representation of Silvana and Maria Luisa, two women that come from very different backgrounds and political stand points who are trying to survive in Santiago. The theme of social structure and symbolism in the women is evident throughout the movie which is shown frequently through the actions of the right-winged and left-winged women; particularly in The March of Empty Pots and Pans and the symbolism of the roles each woman plays. Outside on the streets of Santiago, the audience often sees political slogans draping the city buildings and influential marches from both sides frequently disrupting the peace which both reflect the political ferment that’s in the air (Wood, 2004). The three friends, Gonzalo, Pedro and Silvana, help Silvana’s father take advantage of the political situation by selling...
