Persuasive Speech Reflection

I had the topic for this speech chosen since the second or third week of class. Public radio is such a big part of my life and the life of my family that I knew it would be something that I could write passionately about.

When I started to prepare this speech, I initially had a hard time finding sources. I was focusing on Chicago Public Media as a whole and that was only bringing up one or two hits other than Chicago Public Media’s website. After struggling through that for a few days, I realized that what I really wanted to emphasize was Chicago Public Radio so I searched for that instead. Thankfully I came up with several sources and I built my paper upon those.

I knew that Chicago Public Radio had a fantastic program line-up and that I could use that as the basis for my argument. People love to be entertained. And most people think that Chicago Public Radio is just old people news – all stale and boring. I knew that I had a prime opportunity to expose everyone in class to the diversity that is Chicago Public Radio.

I initially struggled with how to organize my speech without it just becoming one big “send your money to WBEZ” talk. I wanted clear reasons so I chose to focus on three main ideas: News, Entertainment and Community. They are the three big focuses of Chicago Public Radio and WBEZ so I knew that I would find tons of information to back those up.

When I started looking at all of the different news programs that are aired, I was amazed at how many different programs there actually were. I listen all the time but never realized that there were different programs airing – they all just kind of blend into one another. Eight Forty-Eight is one that I always remember because of the opening monologue, which goes something like “…and they took them all and made a giant quilt. That’s my Chicago”. Brilliant.

When it came time to talk about entertainment, I knew that I wouldn’t have a problem. I love the entertainment programming on Chicago Public Radio. Every week we listen to Wait Wait Don’t Tell Me, Car Talk, Wiretap, This American Life, A Prairie Home Companion and Re:Sound. I know the quality of this programming and that there are fabulous programs included in that list that are produced right here in Chicago. We are so fortunate to have such a pool of talent right in our backyard. And supporting that talent through support of Chicago Public Radio just seems natural. I knew that the most powerful reason for people to support Chicago Public Radio and WBEZ was because of their commitment to community. It was not hard to find a laundry list of partnerships and organizations that they have worked with to better things in our great city. I also knew that we are in the suburbs so naming smaller, urban organizations that CPR helps would not have that big of an effect. So I tried to list larger events and organizations that anyone in the suburbs who has an interest in the arts or in education would have heard of.

I enjoyed this speech and I think that I handled it fairly well. I got tripped up a couple of times because I was relying too heavily on my outline and ended up repeating myself but, overall, I think I did well. I was extremely surprised when I got the comment cards from my classmates and found that only one or two are listeners of NPR or Chicago Public Radio. It reassured me that I picked a good topic and opened a whole new world up to at least 12 or 13 people.

For the next speech, I want to work on taking the time to practice giving my speech more and I want to use the opportunity to include visuals to its fullest so that I can draw in my audience.

Cmm 200 Reflection Paper

...Reflection paper Qifei Song Public speaking Instructor: Eric Sucher That was a good speech, I am very happy that I can have the chance to listen to Elie Wiesel. He is a survivor of the Jewish holocaust and he is also political activist. I have some constructive thought of his speech. First, I like his delivery. At the beginning, he was trying to get attention of the audience so he made some jokes at first and that really works. He acted very relaxed and humorous in his introduction. But when he move into the main part; he became serious and talking professional. I think it is very important for public speakers to control their mood while they are change their parts of speech. I think I did a horrible job in my informative speech on the delivery; I was nervous and always look sad. A good speaker should be always be enthusiastic about his or her speech and always keep in mind of the content. Other thing I like is Elie’s speaking is very smooth and natural, even though something I didn’t catch up very clear but that’s my fault. Elie really prepared his speech well and he wants to share his views with us. After hearing the speech, I want to treat every person equally and respect different opinions. Besides, the structure of the speech is very good, main points seem very clear. Compare to last time I hear the speech from Vicente Fox; Ellie’s speech is more impressive and thoughtful. His examples are from his true experience...

...FTVMS 11O Assignment 2: Research Essay (Final) My assignment 2 question is : “Pollay (1986) suggests that advertising has profound consequences due to its pervasiveness, stereotypical portrayals, manipulative and persuasive nature, preoccupation with materialism and consumption, frequent use of sex appeals and lack of information” (Yeshin 18). Critically discuss this claim, looking both at the flaws in Pollay’s argument AND the ways in which aspects of his argument might be considered valid. Hypothesis : Advertising itself is very indistinguishable to the idea of complexation as it has got multi-purposes but connects as one. By having a consumer society it would unquestionable mean that advertising will posses negative aspects that cause manipulative and persuasive, therefore a false consciousness society is established, this is quite visible throughout history of Advertisement. However Advertisement can also influence positive attributes, depending on how an advertisement is understood. Essay: Advertising is often referred as a “mediated form of communication” (Richard and Cullen) usually from a recognisable source that manipulates as it gains control over the viewer to take a particular action in order to be satisfied whether it is materialistic or informational. In the article “Distorted Mirror” by W.Pollay, he suggests that advertising is nothing but pervasiveness and leads to consequences in our society. As he states “Perhaps the least important...

Chris emphasized that it would behoove a person not to read the presentation or even read off a teleprompter. Or else you will lose the audience. Nevertheless, memorizing the talk will ultimately be your best option. However, as mentioned it to can prove quite the challenge in memorizing your talk, just for the fact that at times most people go “Through That Valley of Awkwardness”, where they have yet to memorize there talk to a tee, and at times the audience are able to recognize when the lecture presented now all of a sudden comes across as recited. Bottomline it will behoove you if given the right amount of time to memorize the speech thoroughly, and also have a list of bullet points on a note card to reference to keep the flow going. Thirdly is to “Develop Stage Presence”. For experienced speakers, at times can come across flawlessly. How Might Politicians Use Persuasive Language to Reinforce Their Influencial Power

...How might Politicians use persuasive language to reinforce their Influential power? Introduction This investigating will focus upon the topic ‘Language and Power’, throughout it will explore how power plays a massive part in politics and how politicians use it to make them seem electable. This aspect within the investigation has been chosen because this is an area of interest and a topic I particularly enjoyed whilst studying the AS course. Not only this, but the power section, in my opinion, has the most interesting theory within it but the investigation will tie into another area which equally fascinates me, this being UK politics. This has always been something that I have followed with passion, with this in mind; it has led me to question the very topic. I would like to investigate how politicians use their language, to make them seem more electable and make them seem more favourable to the electorate. From this the Investigation will discover to what extent an election speech impacts on voting. Thus, this investigation aims to explore: • How politicians use a range of persuasive techniques to reinforce their influential power. I expect that the politician who uses persuasion most effectively will seem more favourable to the electorate. Politicians that aren’t confident may hinder their chances with the electorate, even though they use persuasive techniques. This would show...

Vegan Food Presentation

...Demonstration Presentation Reflection Strengths While I was watching my demonstration presentation the first thing I noticed that constant enthusiasm. At the beginning of the video I saw myself being overly excited about presentation, and I thought this excitement would decrease during demonstration. However, the last minutes of presentation, even question-answer part, I observed that I was still in the same level of excitement. So I believe that even though some of my classmates may not be interested in preparing vegan sushi, my passion help me to invoke sympathy from my audience. Unlike the persuasive speech, the demonstrational presentation topic must appeal the audience attention because its purpose is to teach a structure, or steps, of a task. For instance, one of the video showed in the class about how to make a peanut butter sandwich was very common topic, yet the presenter’s distinctive attitude made me to involve in the process. The mood of the presenter, I think, has considerable affects on the audience emotion, and immediate positively emotional feedback also motivates the presenter. Thus I certainly believe that enthusiasm is one of my strength, especially in this presentation, in order to arouse all my audiences’ interest. I hope I can take advantage of this strength as I do my presentations in the future. Related to audience attention, another strength that I have was continually keeping eye contact with my audience. When I watched the video I observed that...

Veterans Having Trouble Finding Jobs After the Military

...Unit 6 Project Veterans Having Trouble Finding Jobs After the Military Mark Everhart Kaplan University Professor Sandra Fontana Veterans who have served this country by going to war are quickly realizing that America is not appreciating the sacrifices made for our service members. Veterans are being passed over for employment for many different reasons. Some of these reasons include Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), lack of job skills for performing civilian jobs, and the inability to cope with the transition from military to civilian life. The unemployment rate for veterans is 6.9 percent (Norman, 2012). The government and the employers need to work together to make the transition out of the military a smoother process. The Department of Veteran Affairs cannot process the applications for the G.I. Bill fast enough to accommodate the veterans. Veterans lack the job skills necessary to perform jobs in the civilian sector after the military. All military veterans should have special training, skill and mind set for the transition from military to civilian life, provided by the government and employers to ensure employability after serving their country regardless of how many years of service one has served. Veterans lack the special training and skills that are necessary to compete with the civilian population. Veterans often have jobs that cannot transfer to the civilian world (Hefling, 2011). For instance if they are an infantryman, they cannot get a job as a mechanic....

Invisible Man Rhetorical Analysis

...respect Cash sought to provide for Addie. By contrast, though highly immoral, Anse ultimately achieves success in getting new teeth and a new wife because his life was rooted in himself, not others. Thus, Anse enjoys his definition of a meaningful life, made possible by his emphasis on himself. Anse demonstrates that a focus on the self inspires greater personal gain that can lead to a meaningful life, but Gatsby and Cash highlight the physical and mental loss caused by an obsession to please others. Further, if we fail to live for our true opinions, others hold the capacity to take advantage of our weak identity. In Invisible Man, the narrator’s inability to understand true racism blinds him with the sense that his Booker T. Washington-esque speech will showcase his “abilities” (Ellison 25). In fact, even though the narrator loses his “dignity,” he stops himself from trying “to win against the voice out there”: “Was not this a moment for humility, for nonresistance?” (Ellison 22, 25). His surrender to the Washington ideology that whites preferred thus causes him to be further exploited. Further, even the Brotherhood takes advantage of the narrator, brainwashing him into falsely believing in its ideology. Specifically, the narrator admits, “I was dominated by the all-embracing idea of Brotherhood” (Ellison 382). Ultimately, the differentiating factor between Anse, Gatsby, and the narrator--all three had been extrinsically motivated (teeth, Daisy and her wealth, fame, respectively)--...
