...experience as an admissions committee member at Stanford. All views expressed here are solely mine and do not necessarily reflect the views or opinions of Stanford University. 1. Introduction In this paper, I outline the various parameters involved in the complex decision making process of a Masters admissions committee in a top graduate school in the US. To clarify this further, (i) This report is mainly targeted at MS applicants, but a lot of it can be extended to PhD applications as well. In most cases, the requirements for a PhD admit will just be a stricter version of those mentioned here. (ii) I do not have a specific list of universities in mind when I say "a top graduate school". Stanford, MIT, UC Berkeley and CMU are certainly up there, but I am not particularly referring to any specific list of graduate school rankings. In a more general sense, I am talking about schools where the default attitude of the admissions committee is "rejected, unless strongly proved otherwise" rather than "let's give him/her the benefit of the doubt". These schools tend to follow a risk minimization policy, and if in doubt, they would reject the candidate rather than risk diluting the quality of the incoming batch. (iii) The content here is targeted only at the applicants to US universities. Though some of it might be the same, I have no personal experience regarding the admission...

Fundamental of Business Writing

...Chapter One Introdution: Fundamentals of Business Writing I. The major differences between school writing and business writing School writing, typically in the form of essays, is aimed at impressing the audience, i.e. examiners. To score high, student writers have to use fairly complicated vocabulary and sentences in their written work. Business writers, however, mainly aim to communicate information to their colleagues, clients, and other associated parties. They are relatively free to use what language that can get the business done efficiently and effectively. II. Seven steps in the process of wring 1. clarifying your aim 2. identifying your readers 3. making a general plan 4. sketching a synopsis (大纲) 5. drafting your text 6. putting the draft aside 7. revising and editing ★ Writing is a recursive and creative process. The detailed plan is not adhered to in actual writing. Writers frequently come up with ideas that are activated in the process of writing. Writers read the text they have already produced to help generate more ideas. In effect, the writing process is no linear at all but is characterized by recursive ness and creativeness. III. Three principles of business writing 1. Clarity – means setting your message across clearly. (See detailed information on page 4) 2. Consideration – good business writers take their readers’ needs, problems, and reactions to the writing into consideration. And they...

The purpose of this chapter is to show you how to write a formal report and how to put together the kind of proposal that often precedes it. As Figure 9-1 shows, many of the elements of formal reports are the same as those for informal ones. You need to pay the same attention to headings, lists, and illustrations, for example. Although much of the advice in the previous chapter could be duplicated in this one, the emphasis here will be on those areas where there’s a difference. ...http://www.ccsenet.org/journal/index.php/ass/article/view/9561/8076 Abstract Reading involves an interactive process in which the reader actively produces meaning through a set of mental processes. There is obviously an ongoing interaction between the reader and the text. Critical reading is related to thinking and that is why we cannot read without thinking. Critical reading involves the following skills: predicting, acknowledging, comparing, evaluating and decision-making. Schemata can be seen as the organized background knowledge, which leads the reader to expect and predict aspects in their interpretation of discourse. Keywords: Interactive, Critical, Reading, Thinking, Skills, Interpretation, Discourse Introduction Reading is a sophisticated activity, which includes psychological, linguistic, and sociological aspects. It is an interactive process between a reader and text. The process of reading involves constructing meaning among the parts of the text and between the text and readers' personal experience. The reader takes the text and gives it meaning. Both reader and writer use background knowledge to construct a text. Carrel (1987) talks about reading as an interactive process between the reader and the text. Meaning does not just reside in the text; it is rather constructed out of the interaction between a reader's background knowledge and what is in the text. Schemata and critical thinking perform an elaborative function in comprehension when we use our knowledge...

Personal Narrative: My American Dream

...My American Dream started out with my college education and how I would be attending the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. My scholarships rounded to about seventeen thousand dollars and later I became a Nurse Practitioner. My spouse also worked in the medical field and we had a nice house and cars. This American Dream that I have can be accomplished by setting goals high enough to challenge me and make myself work harder for the things that I desire. In order to achieve this dream, I have to change some of things I tend to do in high school. For example, I am known to procrastinate with work that needs to be done....
