Salt, specifically sodium chloride, is a naturally occurring crystalline mineral that has many uses. Throughout history, salt has been an important cultural (Douglas, H. n.d.) and economic commodity. Salt has many beneficial applications in commercial industries. Salt plays a role in chemical manufacturing, food preservation and consumption, plastic fabrication, glassmaking, pharmaceutical synthesis, pulp and paper production, textile production, waste and water treatment, petroleum production, agricultural processes, dye production, and de-icing methods (). However, as beneficial as salt is to our society, its use can lead to major environmental pollution issues. Pollution can affect the air, water, and land, and negatively affects the organisms living there (Nathanson, J. 2014). In this experiment, salt will be studied as the pollutant. Although Chloride is widespread across the earth and is essential to biological functions, the presence of too much chloride can lead to disastrous results (Elphick, J. et al., 2011). Pollution caused by salt intrusion into freshwater is a pressing issue in our world. Since less than 3% of Earth’s water is fresh, the amount of potable water diminishes when it is polluted. Not only that, but pollution of freshwater can kill the algae plants that live in the water, leading to oxygen depletion, which kills the other organisms living in the environment. Even though the pollution only directly affects small organisms, it can lead to a disruption of the food chain and cause problems for human society (Pielou, E. 1998). Using a spectrophotometer to measure light absorbance, the growth of the algae will be measured over the course of the following two weeks to determine the effects of the sodium chloride on the algae. If the light absorbance of a tube is high, then the algae is prospering and growth is present. However, if the light absorbency is low, then the low light absorbance will indicate inhibited algal growth. Tubes of AlgaGro and Ankistrodesmus without pollutant will be used as negative control groups. Test tube “blanks” containing only AlgaGro and sodium chloride will be created for each different salt concentration. By measuring “blanks” to determine the absorbance of salt water and AlgaGro solutes, the true absorbance of Ankistrodesmus can be accurately measured. Duplicates of each test tube will be used to help prevent sampling
