‘Should Undergraduates Specialize?’ - Analysis

...Patrick Allitt, the author of “Should Undergraduates Specialize?” begins his essay by narrating the different college experience he had as a young adult compared to the college experience his daughter is about to have afterwards, Allitt continues his essay by comparing his own life experiences with his daughter’s, and then later discussing the differences between American and British education and the advantages and disadvantages of those disparities. After the discussion, the author effectively concludes that American colleges should provide more specialized education to those students who want it. The author presents an effective argument by using his own personal experiences as examples, deductive logic to explain the advantages and disadvantages between American and British education, and using a smart and objective tone to narrate the facts. Allitt uses numbers of paragraphs to narrate his study experience and his daughter’s to expound the difference between British and American education. This comparison obviously strikes a chord with the readers. Allitt lists what they take to college. That’s really different. When he went to college, he had a lot of pens and a record player. But his daughter only takes a laptop and an iPod. It is a sharp contrast to attract readers’ interests in the opening paragraph. Discovering One’s Talent: Learning from Academic Specialization

...exogenous difference in the timing of academic Abstract specialization within the British system of higher education to test whether education yields information about one’s match quality in different fields of study. In distinguishing between systems requiring early and late specialization, he predicts the likelihood of an individual switching to an occupation unrelated to one’s field of study. If higher education serves mainly to provide specific skills, the model predicts more switching in a system requiring late specialization since the cost of switching is lower in terms of foregone skills. Using the Universities Statistical Record from 1972 to 1993 and the 1980 National Survey of Graduates and Diplomates, he finds that individuals who specialize early, as in the case of England, are more likely to switch to an unrelated occupation, implying that the benefits to increased match quality are sufficiently large to outweigh the greater loss in skills from specializing early. With regard to instruction, economists have made substantial progress in specifying and identifying the economic value of higher education, as it increases the value productivity of human agents as workers . . . the much neglected activity is that of discovering talent. It, too, can be approached by treating it as a process which provides students with opportunities to discover whether they have the particular capabilities that are required for the type and level of education at which they are working. — Theodore...

Product Proposal: Hp Touchpad

...Many reviewers claimed that the 3.0 Web OS reminded them of the Apple iOS, which would lead to a major downfall for the HP touchpad. Hewlett-Packard is an American information technology company that specializes in enterprise systems, software, PC’s, printers, and services that wanted to try and seize a piece of the mobile market, specifically a piece of the tablet market share. With HP’s main focus being enterprise systems, software and services, there was no backing for the TouchPad by the CEO. Figure 1 shows the tablets in the market at the time the HP TouchPad was launched and the comparisons between them all. Figure 1. Figure 1. Two months after being on the market, HP dropped the TouchPad and WebOS business to focus on their more successful areas (Reisinger 2011). In order for the HP TouchPad to succeed, it must have a differentiation from all the other tablets on the market. Many reviewers claimed that the product was to close to the iPad 2 in size and operating system. HP’s marketing strategies also lagged due to the limited research and development of the product because of a fast paced launch date. By rushing the launch date, HP never got to promote the advantages of their product compared to its competitors. For the NPD marketing strategy, HP should make their product unique to a point that the tablet stands out from competitors, but not so much that it is an elephant in the room....

Statement of Purpose

...suicidal, misguided attempts at competing globally (along with rapidly developing opportunities in the global marketplace) have placed a dramatic premium on individuals who take the time to properly train themselves in international business. For me, the Columbia MBA is a significant component of this training. I foresee my own career moving in the direction of European/American business, initially from an advisory perspective (i.e. investment banking or consulting) and ultimately from a leadership role within a manufacturing entity, preferably a start-up venture. This prophecy, in part, has evolved from my past experiences in western and eastern Europe which, in turn, have formed my opinions about certain opportunities that should emerge in the future: there should be, with a good degree of certainty, immense windfall gains and comparative advantages for US-trained/thinking business leaders and managers in the European markets in the coming years. This foresight along with my personal entrepreneurial bent and an affinity for finance will play a large role in the...
