In the excerpt from Hunger of Memory author Richard Rodriguez discusses how he dealt with speaking English as a child. Both him and his parents weren’t good at speaking English and would often struggle trying to speak it outside their homes. Rodriguez talks about how it was unsettling to hear his parents talk a broken English and how he trusted them less due to this. He discusses that his family wasn’t able to belong with the public and that other people were very distant to them because they were American. When he was at home it was a different story, he liked speaking the language of Spanish. He felt like him and other Spanish speakers were related because they both had felt the same feeling of not being apart of white people. He associated

Hunger Of Memory Richard Rodriguez Summary

...II May 2, 2015 Book Critique The Hunger Of Memory: And the Education of Richard Rodriguez “Hunger of Memory: The Education of Richard Rodriguez” is an autobiography, that vividly paints and reveals a journey in which Rodriguez withstood numerous struggles in order to become the American he is currently known for. He endured what most would call a life set up for failure, yet he challenged himself and transformed from a young Mexican American to a genuine man. However Rodriguez remembers his own experience being a minority, questioning his own value and self as he grew older. Through his narrative we are able to see his core obstacle of learning to become the ideal American. Rodriquez consistently...

Difficulty In Academic Writing

...their own idea about certain topic and present it to readers in a written form. Although repeating or summarizing other people’s arguments is appropriate and necessary writing technique, the skill is insufficient when students express their opinion effectively in academic setting. According to the author, what college students ought to learn about writing is that “other people’s text can serve as tools for helping you say more about your own ideas” (34). In order to illustrate this point, Greene gives an example of Richard Rodriguez, an author of Hunger of Memory, who uses others’ writing to say more about his experience of academic as non-native speaker of English and suffering from cultural difference (33-34). Rodriguez borrows another writer, Richard Hoggart’s idea of “scholarship boy” and uses it to discover new approach to his academic hardship which suffered a cultural difference between United States and Mexico (Greene 33-34). This example shows that Rodriguez does not merely repeat another writer’s idea in his writing but approaches differently to his experience of academic through using other text. Therefore, through this example, Greene implies that students should not merely repeat another writer’s idea but utilize it to develop their own idea in writing. The author believes that as long as students only acquire summarizing skill, they cannot become an effective writer in academic...

How Did Cliff Take Advantage of Principles of Operant Conditioning to Modify His Staff’s Behavior?

...5 learning 160 chapter chapter outline A Four-Legged Co-Worker Declan lies on his back wanting his belly scratched. The eight-year-old black Labrador cross swings his legs in the air for a few minutes before resigning himself to chewing on someone’s shoe. In the office he behaves like any pet dog, but in the field he is like a tornado—focused on finding illegal drugs being smuggled. Declan is a drug-detector dog for the Customs Service and has been busting drug smugglers with his handler, Kevin Hattrill, for eight years. Airport passengers look on with curiosity as Declan darts around people and their luggage. Within minutes he sniffs out a person of interest, who is taken away and questioned by airport authorities. Dogs like Declan are trained to detect illegal drugs, such as cannabis, methamphetamine, and cocaine, or explosives. Hattrill said the dogs were dual responsetrained when they detected something. “If the odor is around a passenger, they are trained to sit beside them. If it’s around cargo, they are trained to scratch. When they detect something, their whole temperament will change. “The dogs can screen up to 300 people within 10 to 15 minutes at the airport. Nothing else can do that.” (McKenzie-McLean, 2006, p. 7) module 15 Classical Conditioning The Basics of Classical Conditioning Applying Conditioning Principles to Human Behavior Extinction Generalization and Discrimination module 16 Operant Conditioning The Basics of Operant Conditioning...

Preface This isn’t really a teacher’s manual, not, at least, in the sense of a catechism of questions and correct answers and interpretations. Because the questions provided after each selection in Rereading America are meant to stimulate dialogue and debate — to generate rather than terminate discourse — they rarely lend themselves to a single appropriate response. So, while we’ll try to clarify what we had in mind when framing a few of the knottier questions, we won’t be offering you a list of “right” answers. Instead, regard this manual as your personal support group. Since the publication of the first edition, we’ve had the chance to learn from the experiences of hundreds of instructors nationwide, and we’d like to use this manual as a forum where we can share some of their concerns, suggestions, experiments, and hints. We’ll begin with a roundtable on issues you’ll probably want to address before you meet your class. In the first section of this manual, we’ll discuss approaches to...

Behaviorism Still Alive and Kicking

...Unit 1 Discussion Board Applying Learning Theories EDU622-1304C-02 Regina Dzwonar Most records acknowledged formal education as existing as least as far back as ancient Greece. The big three names universally known are Socrates, Plato and Aristotle. Education at this time was concerned mainly with reason, logic and philosophy. Socrates, Plato and Aristotle differed in preferences of extremes. Socrates is infamous for pushing limits while Aristotle preached balance. Many historians consider Plato the most sophisticated of the three; Socrates taught on the streets of Athens. Sources, such as the American Psychological Association, credit Plato, with founding the first formal institution of education, “After returning to Athens, Plato set up his own school, which was called the Academy. Philosophy and other subjects were taught there, and the Academy continued to produce scholars for many centuries after Plato died.” (Downey, 2006, para. 6). Aristotle, according to legend, was the teacher of Alexander the Great. The most notable theory from this time the Socratic Method, which consists of posing probing questions to students rather than espousing a hierarchy of knowledge. Brief History of its Founding Modern theories such as behaviorism, founded in the early twentieth century, are associated with theorists including Watson, Skinner, Pavlov and Thorndike. Watson known as the father of behaviorism proposed an alternative to the views of Wilhelm Wundt the founder of...

PREFACE Rationale We agreed to produce the instructor’s manual for the sixth edition of A First Look at Communication Theory because it’s a first-rate book and because we enjoy talking and writing about pedagogy. Yet when we recall the discussions we’ve had with colleagues about instructor’s manuals over the years, two unnerving comments stick with us: “I don’t find them much help”; and (even worse) “I never look at them.” And, if the truth be told, we were often the people making such points! With these statements in mind, we have done some serious soul-searching about the texts that so many teachers—ourselves...
