One way voters make political decisions is by using the information they acquire in their everyday lives (the by-product theory of information) (Popkin, 1991). Based on their everyday lives, the threat depicted in the Yes on 4 may have come across as overly dramatic and unrealistic. On the other hand, voters’ everyday experiences could have harmed the Campaign for Teen Safety’s position. As pointed out by the campaign and many of its coalition members, most teens do consult their parents in the case of an unintended pregnancy.
