Vitamin C
Background Information

Vitamins play an essential role in animal metabolic processes. They are groups of complex organic compounds that do not provide energy. However, without vitamins, animals may develop deficiency diseases or other abnormal conditions. Although most animals cannot synthesise vitamins, certain animals can. Apart from vitamin D, the human body cannot make its own vitamins. As humans, we must obtain the vitamins we require through the food that we consume.

3D Structure of Vitamin C
Vitamin C also known as L-Ascorbic acid is one of the most important nutrients and is essential for human beings. Vitamin C’s IUPAC name is 2-oxo-L-theo-hexono-1,4-lactone-2,3-enediol. We need a constant supply of vitamin C in our diet as the human body cannot store vitamin C because it is not a fat-soluble vitamin and where there is excess vitamin C, it is removed from the body through the urine. As well as this, vitamin C is very important in the growth and repair of tissues. It plays a crucial role in the healing of wounds and the repair and maintenance of teeth, cartilage and bones. Ascorbic acid is a “vitamer” of vitamin C that has antioxidant properties and is soluble in water to create a slightly acidic solution. A vitamer is “One of two or more related chemical substances that fulfill the same specific vitamin function”. Antioxidants block some of the damage caused by free radicals, which can contribute to the development of conditions such as cancer and arthritis. Antioxidants can also help to reduce damage that toxins from cigarette smoke may cause to the body.
As said before, lack of vitamin C may cause deficiency diseases such as scurvy. Scurvy is a disease that causes your gums to bleed due to the collagen formation in the body being poor. Scurvy also causes…...

Statistics Ia - Comparing Vitamin C of an Apple Versus an Orange

...Assessment: Comparing Vitamin C of an Apple versus an Orange Cazmir Leenheer Biology 09-08-’11 Research Question: Is freshly squeezed apple (Malus domestica) juice or orange (Citrus sinensis) juice a richer and therefore healthier source of vitamin C (Ascorbic acid)? Aim: To measure the vitamin C content of 20 apples and 20 oranges and subsequently using a statistical Mann-Witney U test accordingly, concluding which fruit contains a richer source of vitamin C. Background Information: As the aim of this lab experiment is to establish whether raw apple juice is richer in vitamin C compared to raw orange juice and vice versa, the collected results will suggest which intake is the healthier option and how much of it you will need to sustain your optimal Vitamin C levels. Vitamin C is a essential nutrient needed for the growth and repair of tissues in all parts of your body. Vitamin C is also one of the key antioxidants, which are nutrients that block part of the damage caused by free radicals. Free radicals are made when your body breaks down food or when a person is exposed to factors such as tobacco, smoke and radiation. Furthermore, a sufficient vitamin C level within the body can prevent the development of health conditions such as cancer, heart diseases, strokes and high blood pressure (Henrik, 2008). Raw citrus fruits are best known to be good sources of vitamin C, however others also include broccoli, guava, papaya and red/green chili peppers. Vitamin C is......

Vitamins

...believe that they consume an inadequate amount of vitamins to sustain a healthy lifestyle or that ingesting an excessive sum of certain vitamins will improve their health and combat certain diseases. However, this is simply not the case. If a person eats an adequate diet, with foods rich in vitamins, which most Americans do, there is no need to take supplements or consume fortified foods. More so, some vitamins if taken in excess can actually be counterproductive and cause health problems. To further understand, once water soluble vitamins are ingested into the body they move directly to the blood stream, where they are able to move freely about. Whereas, fat soluble vitamins must first travel through the lymph then into the blood and can only be transported with the help of protein. More so, the kidneys, which monitor the flow of blood, detect and remove necessary amounts of water soluble vitamins, but sometimes when overconsumption of water soluble vitamins are ingested, a large excess of vitamins are released, which overwhelm the system, creating an adverse effect. Although, fat soluble vitamins stay in the system longer causing more harmful affects when people excessively take them; some water soluble vitamins can still be detrimental to the human system. Some of the water soluble vitamins that may be toxic when consumed in overabundance are B(6), folate, and vitamin C. When people intake too much B(6) vitamins there can be neurological damage, especially when......

Vitamins

...Fat and Water-Soluble Vitamins Carolyn Johnson SCI/241 February 27, 2014 Anna Brashier Fat and Water-Soluble Vitamins Vitamins are organic compounds that are essential in the diet in small amounts to promote and regulate body processes necessary for growth, reproduction, and health maintenance. Vitamins are classified based on solubility, some are soluble in water known as water-soluble vitamins, while others are soluble in fat known as fat-soluble vitamins. Vitamins promote and regulate the body activities. Each vitamin has at least one important function. Some are needed for vision health, blood clotting, and bone health, some vitamins are needed for organ health and system function. (Grosvenor, 2012, Chapter 7). Some vitamins have coenzymes and few others function as an antioxidants. (Grosvenor, 2012, Chapter 7). Fat-soluble vitamins are vitamins A, D, E, and K and are found along with fats in foods. Fat soluble vitamins are soluble in fat, these vitamins can be stored in the liver and in fatty tissues. High nutrient sources for vitamin A can be found in Carrots, squash, apricots, and other orange and yellow vegetables. High nutrient sources of vitamin D: sunlight, liver, egg yolks, and oily fish such as salmon naturally have vitamin D. Vitamin D fortified foods are milk, margarine, some yogurts, cheese, and cereals. Vitamin E is found in nuts, seeds, canola oil, safflower oil, sunflower oil, and leafy green vegetables like spinach, mustard greens, and wheat......

Vitamin C

...Vitamin C (ASCORBIC ACID) Overview Information Vitamin C is a vitamin. Some animals can make their own vitamin C, but people must get this vitamin from food and other sources. Good sources of vitamin C are fresh fruits and vegetables, especially citrus fruits. Vitamin C can also be made in a laboratory. Most experts recommend getting vitamin C from a diet high in fruits and vegetables rather than taking supplements. Fresh-squeezed orange juice or fresh-frozen concentrate is a better pick than ready-to-drink orange juice. The fresh juice contains more active vitamin C. Drink fresh-frozen orange juice within one week after reconstituting it for the most benefit. It you prefer ready-to-drink orange juice, buy it 3 to 4 weeks before the expiration date, and drink it within one week of opening. Historically, vitamin C was used for preventing and treating scurvy. Scurvy is now relatively rare, but it was once common among sailors, pirates, and others who spent long periods of time onboard ships. When the voyages lasted longer than the supply of fruits and vegetables, the sailors began to suffer from vitamin C deficiency, which led to scurvy. These days, vitamin C is used most often for preventing and treating the common cold. Some people use it for other infections including gum disease, acne and other skin infections, bronchitis, human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) disease, stomach ulcers caused by bacteria called Helicobacter pylori, tuberculosis, dysentery......

C-Vitamin

Vitamin C

...Vitamin C Vitamin C, also known as ascorbic acid, is a water-soluble vitamin that is naturally present in some foods, added to others, and available as a dietary supplement. Humans, unlike most animals, are unable to synthesize vitamin C, so it is an essential dietary component. In some settings, vitamin C serves as a cofactor helping a specific enzyme perform its job, but in others, it acts as an antioxidant participating in more general ways. Vitamin C loses electrons easily, a characteristic that allows it to perform as an antioxidant. Vitamin C is like a bodyguard for water-soluble substances. In the cells and body fluids, Vitamin C protects tissues from the oxidative stress of free radicals thus may play an important role in preventing diseases. Food sources for Vitamin C come from fruits and vegetables mainly. Broccoli, carrots, potato, tomato juice, banana, orange, strawberries, watermelon, cheese, citrus fruits, cabbage-type vegetables, dark green vegetables, cantaloupe, lettuce, tomatoes, papayas and mangos are all significant sources of Vitamin C. Functions of Vitamin C in the body include collagen synthesis, which strengthens blood vessel walls, forms scar tissue, provides matrix for bone growth. More functions include antioxidants, thyroxin synthesis, amino acid metabolism, strengthens resistance to infection, helps in absorption of iron.  Ascorbic acid is absorbed in the body by both active transport and simple diffusion. With regular intake the absorption rate......

Vitamins

...“Vitamins were first introduced in 1911 by the Warsaw-born biochemist Casimir Fink (1884-1967). Nutrition is essential for growth, development and well-being. Behavior to promote good health should start early in life with breastfeeding and continue through life with the development of healthy eating habits. It is also the responsibility of the parents to continue to contribute to young people’s growing knowledge of nutrition, not only by providing nutritious meals in the home but also by periodically explaining the importance of vitamins, minerals and other essential vitamins. Too much or too little intake of vitamins can lead to serious illnesses. A person can become vitamin deficient if they are lacking the minimum amount of certain vitamins needed by the body to maintain regular good health. If long term vitamin deficiency occurs, a deficiency disease can develop, and this can also lead to probable death. Unlike some other food substances, such as protein and carbohydrates, of which the body needs to consume large regular quantities, vitamins are needed in small quantities. Hence, vitamins, minerals and supplements should be an important part of our daily diet in order to achieve a healthy lifestyle and to avoid vitamin deficiencies. According to researcher Meirner “a deficiency in either vitamin B12 or folate may due to inadequate dietary intake, malnutrition, chronic, significant alcohol intake, problems with gastrointestinal absorption, history of gastric surgery,......

Vitamin C: Can It Help to Prevent Cardiovascular Disease?

...excellent sources of vitamin C, which is a water soluble vitamin. Fruits with the highest sources of vitamin C include cantaloupe, citrus fruits and juices, such as orange and grapefruit kiwi fruit mango and papaya among others, whereas vegetables that have vitamin C comprise broccoli, cauliflower, green and red bell peppers, and brussels sprout 2. Vitamin C – as an antioxidant – functions by helping to neutralize the action of free radicals, which are substances that damage DNA and cells or tissue 5. With time, the build up of free radicals is known to accelerate the aging process as well as the development of chronic diseases such as cardiovascular disease, cancer and arthritis 2. This paper aims to give a brief overview of the impact of vitamin C on cardiovascular disease. The case for vitamin C in cardiovascular disease Various studies have examined the role of vitamin C in regards to preventing chronic diseases that are triggered by oxidative stress, such as cardiovascular disease; however, reports on such studies are not consistent. For instance, few clinical studies such as the Women's Antioxidant Cardiovascular Study (WACS) reported no significant impact of vitamin C supplementation on the prevention of either primary or secondary cardiovascular disease 3. Furthermore, in a longitudinal study that comprised 8,171 women, aged 40 years or older with a history of cardiovascular disease, it was reported that supplementation with 500 mg/day vitamin C over a ten-year......

Analysis of Guts by C. Bukowski

...Analysis of Guts by Charles Bukowski Setting The setting of Guts is very depressing, Bukowski makes the setting sound very dull and sometimes disgusting, here I am referring to page 2 line 8: “I reached into a paper sack full of vomit and empties”. This helps to give a picture of Hanks living situation. The setting works as a mirror to the protagonist (Hank Chinaski), because Hank mentions that he is an antihero, and doesn’t like the “clean-shaven boy”, it would therefore make sense that the setting which is grey and often disgusting is a way to emphasize Hank Chinaski as a character. He often mentions that the setting isn’t very good, an example of this could be at page 2, line 12: “What was she doing running a place like that”, here Hank is talking about the tenant, who is a beautiful young girl, he clearly thinks that she could do better than the place she is running now (the place Hank lives). Character Hank Chinaski Hank is the protagonist of the story, he is “not a very nice man” (page 1, line 1), doesn’t like “laws, morals, religions and rules.” (page 1, line 9) and also doesn’t like “to be shaped by society” (page 1, line 9-10). Hank also shows signs of anarchism, in the beginning he says that he doesn’t like to be shaped by society. This sounds a lot like the thoughts of an anarchist, Hank just have another way of showing his anarchism, instead of throwing rocks at the police, he’s just sitting at home, getting drunk not caring about society’s norms and......
