Why Do Companies Use Antibiotics In America?

Imagine eating a piece of steak in a restaurant, it looks good, tastes good, and overall is healthy for the human body. Many people assume that meat from stores or restaurants are healthy, but what they don’t know is that this food can potentially kill them. Antibiotics are used in America for many of the livestock we eat. The purpose of giving animals this is to preventing disease and increasing efficiency and growth rate in the animal, but at the same time this can cause bacteria to become more resistant, destroy our immune system, and eventually leads to the common disease to be more of a threat to us. Antibiotics should be used less in our livestock to ensure that the consumers are not in danger from these drugs.

Bacteria resistance has been increasing every year around the world because of the overuse of antibiotics at a rapid pace and is harder to fight off. Many people think that these bacteria pose no threat to their communities but the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says “Every year, more than two million people in the United States get infections that are resistant to …show more content…
They claim that they only use a sufficient about of antibiotics when in fact an estimated amount of 70% used in the United States are used in our livestock and around 32 million pounds of antibiotics are used in one year in the US (“Sharp Increase Seen in Sales” Page 1). In addition, many farmers claim that the use of antibiotics is for increased growth rate and to combat disease. On average, more antibiotics are used for growth rate rather than fighting disease, showing that the farmers are actually using these drugs to increase sales. Many companies claim that if we cut back the use of antibiotics it can affect our economy negatively, showing that at the end of the day that money is valued more than the general health of our society to these
