1. Assess Lafley’s leadership of Procter and Gamble. How does his style contrast with that of Jager’s?
Based on case 27 (P & G), it is deductable to say that Lafley performed well as a manager. He was a transformational leader. He was a CEO who believed in the ability of his staff as the agents to bring the desired changes in the organization. For instance, he always involved his staff in the firm’s management by assigning them several vital responsibilities. By doing this, many employees were able to key in their ideas towards innovation of new products. On the other hand, Jager was an individualistic leader who could not seek his staffs’ opinion when it came to decision making. He instead divided them and managed to make them oppose the company’s culture.
Secondly, Lafley was a manager who had the consumers’ mind at heart when making new products. His philosophy was that the more important persons to the company were its consumers because they were the ones who would use the products at the end of the day. In fact, he even advocated for the manufacturing of cost effective products as compared to his predecessor who introduced very expensive products which were not affordable. In the long run, the company became profitable and it now enjoys dominance over her fellow competitors. 2. What were the intangible resources Lafley focused on?
Lafley introduced a reliable communication channel within the company. He went against the company’s culture of separation of the management from the other employees by bringing the executive managers closer to their respective staff. This ensured a free and first flow of information which eventually hastened decision making as compared to the earlier arrangement.
In addition, he used market intelligence to reach out to his objective of improving the company’s profitability. He always had the customers’ need in mind when he
