Whether they are between nations, people or corporations there have always been great rivalries in our past and will be many more on through our future. Each contestant always has its own advantages over the other as well as the people or organizational backing them. Very commonly the supporters feel very strongly about which side they have chosen and will go to great lengths to support their claim. In the infinite battle between the Jedi order and the Sith, we face this age old dilemma of: “Who is better?” Within the Star Wars universe, Sith vs. Jedi is also often referred to as the light side vs. the dark side of the force. Nowhere in its history is one labeled as good or evil. Since the ancient Rakatan, the original users of the dark side around 30,000 BBY (Before the Battle of Yavin), the dark side was just another aspect of the force. Although in our traditional standards of good and evil, where the Jedi are known as keepers of the peace and justice, and the Sith are known to seek out galactic domination and harness there power through raw emotions such as anger, hatred, and greed, it can be argued that neither one is good or evil, and in fact each aspect are both, in fact, good and evil. Many narrative heroes use all or many of these steps. One particular character is Luke Skywalker from Star Wars. In his journey to become a Jedi he goes through these initial stages. Luke Skywalker lives with his Aunt and Uncle on a farm. Luke wants to be a pilot but his uncle has been holding him back from joining the academy so that Luke can help out on the farm. In order to get enough hands to compensate for Luke’s departure they must purchase droids to work on the farm. This is where he meets R2-D2, a droid that the family purchases from some space creatures called the Jowas. R2-D2 contains a message from a women name Princess Leia. In the message, she is addressing a man named Obi-wan Kenobi. Luke figures that she means Ben Kenobi who is an old man that lives on Luke’s planet. Luke decides that he will go later to look for Ben and figure out what the message is about. However, R2-D2 is determined to find Obi-wan Kenobi as soon as possible and ends up leaving in the night to find him. The main Mandolarin forces splintered after their defeat with only a fraction avoiding the Republics retribution. The Spartans had lost their home system to the Republic army. The Spartan Mandolarins gathered as many of their people as possible and punching a hole in the blockading Republic forces escaping into hyperspace. The main bulk of the Spartan Mandolarins stayed behind savaging the Republic fleet and ground forces before being wiped out. This sacrifice prevented the Republic from determining where the escaping refugees had headed. Traveling for two months further and further into the unexplored regions of the outer edge of the galaxy the refugee armada arrived at what would become their new home. Krayat they named the new system after a fierce dragon from their home system. The system contained a red giant star and 14 planets. 6 of the planets were gas giants with 4 to 12 moons each. 2 were to close to the sun to be life sustaining. 4 were beyond the life zone and were froze rocks. That left 2 viable planets in the life zone and each had developed ecosystems with no indigenous intelligent life. The half a million refugees crammed onto the warships and civilian ships began to rebuild. A millennium later the Spartans have changed little in their life philosophy. ...So, I’m going to have to do to this one what I did to the first one, and again, I fully acknowledge the Plinkett reviews as a source for me to draw from. The big difference here is that while I was more than willing to give a little leeway to The Phantom Menace, Attack of the Clones gets no such love. Plain and simple: this movie was terrible. The Direction First and foremost, we need to remember one big thing about the first 3 movies: only one was directed by George Lucas. The other 2 were done by directors Lucas respected (Kershner and Marquand). These movies are 100% Lucas and, in the case of Clones, he elected to direct a movie that was nearly entirely filmed against a green screen. This allowed him to do filming of characters against a blank canvas while allowing him to basically design whatever world he wanted around them. Green screens had long been used for special effects and matte fills, but hadn’t been used this heavily at this time. While Episode II wasn’t a full “digital backlot” film, there were tons and tons of shots that had actors doing their thing with nothing around them but green cloth. The upside here is that digital backlots can save a lot of money in film production since you don’t have to build sets that are either very complicated (aka “expensive”) or utterly impossible. The downside is that if your director isn’t, you know… an actor’s director, the actors all end up like they’re acting in front of a bunch of green cloth because they have nothing...
