The life map: self-location and personal linkages assignment planted the seed for a personal journey. This assignment began the critical self-reflection on who I am and where I stand in society. More importantly, this laid the foundation for who I am as a social worker. This helped me reflect on my personal beliefs, opinions and "isms", allowing me to identify how these hinder or help my practice. However, presently what I believe to be the most valuable learning is my reflection on my social location.

As outlined within my life map assignment, my maternal ancestors were of the Qalipu Mi'kmaq First Nations. Unfortunately, due to colonization my ancestors diligently worked towards hiding our heritage and as a result, our culture was lost. Although curious to learn about and for cultural connection …show more content…
As I reflect on Donna Baines teachings, Ferrer (2017) shared with us in module 1, "self-reflexive practice and ongoing social analyze are essential components to anti-oppressive practice and in order to engage in an anti-oppressive practice, we must continue to engage in self and critical reflection". Paired with, module 2 learnings where the emphasis was placed on the importance of and role within society that power and privilege play. Thus, to be an ally I must be aware of my power and privilege. Therefore, although I am susceptible to oppression based on my gender my physical appearance places me socially within a role of privilege and power. ...Compensation & Benefits 1/24/16 Assignment 1 Assignment 1 1. I am using Lost Spur Golf Course as my example for mapping compensation strategies. One key point of my company’s strategy is external competiveness. Lost Spur will offer unique deals compared to the other golf courses in the area. Some forms of compensation I received while working is unlimited golf, free golf, and 40% discounts towards the pro shop apparel and food. Another compensation strategy Lost Spur used was internal alignment. Aside from the managers and employees who have been working there for an extended period of time, most employees were paid the same. However, the company did support career growth. If you excelled at your job, there were opportunities for promotions and increased pay. In a sense, they used “working hard” as an incentive for career growth. 2. As I stated in question one, most employees at the golf course were paid the same. This is similar to SAS’s philosophy where “Everyone is part of the SAS family.” So, one key difference between Lost Spur and Microsoft is the internal alignment. The differences in Microsoft’s pay are seen as returns for superior performance whereas Lost Spur does not have a lot of pay differences between its employees. Another key difference between SAS, Microsoft, and Lost Spur is career growth. Lost Spur offers a high amount of career growth although Microsoft and SAS are relatively neutral according to the strategy map. 3. There are many key similarities...

...Mapping Immunity to Change By: LaKisha M. Crawford It's difficult to change. This is demonstrated by the number of New Year's resolutions we make and how few of them actually lead to lasting change. For most of us, the resolutions are just more evidence that change attempts seem doomed from the start. Yet most of us see our resolutions as worthy and important. We truly want change in our life, and we are sincere in our commitment to achieving it but just don’t know how. Kegan and Lahey developed an Immunity to change X-ray to help leaders change and become the leaders that they want to be. Not everyone is a natural born leader. Leadership is something that has to be learned. Knowing how to effectively manage your workload is an important part of being a good leader. Learning how to delegate tasks out to employees, prioritize, set realistic deadlines, avoid distractions and say no to unreasonable requests can help to increase your sense of job satisfaction and that of your staff. This also enables you to produce work of a higher quality, because you are able to place more of a focus on the projects you should be spending your time on. Everyone has a well-tuned system of coping mechanisms in place which helps keep us safe and helps us to avoid fear, anxiety, and emotional discomfort. Kegan and Lahey liken this phenomenon to an immune system. Our own emotional immune system is intelligent in...
