The author uses a lot of descriptions when he talks about his past. The tone of this excerpt is reminiscent. He is constantly comparing the past with present to show how times have changed. The author starts off by telling us how he used to go camping at this lake every summer with his dad and friends. Then one summer he deiced to take his son there “who has never had any fresh water up his nose and who had seen lily pads only from train windows” (White). The author notices many changes in his present visit to lake.
For example, White talks about how they didn’t have many maneuvers on the boats people had to park and reverse by themselves. In paragraph 4 White says, “Motor boats in those days didn’t have clutches, and you would make a landing by shutting off the motor at the proper time and coasting in with a dead rudder. But there was a way of reversing them, if you learned the trick, by cutting the switch and putting it on again exactly on the final dying revolution of the flywheel, so that it would kick back against compression and begin reversing.” People had to learn timing and technique to control the boat. “In those other summer times all motors were inboard; and when they were at a little distance, the noise they made was a sedative, an ingredient of summer sleep”( White). Before we used Facebook to connect with people all over the world and connect with our friends but now, some of us it as a gateway to start bullying people behind a screen. Social media has caused many suicide and suicide attempts. People are so fixated on what people think about them. People tweet pictures of these “skinny beautiful models” daily , the average 14 year old would see this picture of the skinny model and think that’s how she is supposed to look, but little do they know that technology has photo shopped the image . The reality is that nobody is perfect, each body has their own imperfections and social media covers that
