Students and Sleep Benjamin Franklin said, “Early to bed early to rise makes a man healthy, wealthy, and wise.” But does this apply to teenagers? Many students between the ages of 13-18 are not getting the sleep they need to be prepared for school. My claim is that all IB schools should start at 10 am. Research in the 1990’s shows that teenager’s tendency to stay up late and wake up later is biologically determined (sleepfoundation.org). If students naturally stay up late then how can they be expected to wake up as early as they do to get to school while still being able to focus? By simply pushing back school start times by 2 hours we can relieve stress on students and allow them to become better rested. Teenager’s sleep cycles vary from …show more content…
A study conducted by Dr. Kyla Wahlstrom at the University of Minnesota, demonstrates the impact of pushing back school start times. After the Minneapolis Public School District changed the starting times of seven high schools from 7:15 a.m. to 8:40 a.m., Dr. Wahlstrom investigated the impact of later start times on student performance, and the results are encouraging. Dr. Wahlstrom found that students benefited by obtaining five or more extra hours of sleep per week. School enrollment and attendance rates increased as well. But most of all, students were well rested and ready to learn (sleepfoundation.org). If start times are pushed back by just 2 hours students will not feel so pressured to be at school so early in the morning. In turn this will result in a much more cohesive learning environment, causing teenagers to learn better and learn …show more content…
Many teens suffer from sleep disorders which are easily preventable, due to something as simple as lack of sleep. These disorders include narcolepsy, insomnia, restless legs syndrome, sleep apnea, and many more (sleepfoundation.org). Each and every one of these diseases inhibits a student’s ability to learn and succeed in school. This can be prevented rolling school start times back 2 hours, to 10 am, allowing school hours to fall more in line with students’ natural sleep cycles. According to the Birmingham Police Department, although they can’t arrest someone solely on this, being sleepy behind the wheel is equivalent to a 0.8 blood alcohol level, which is illegal in the state of Alabama. Could you learn and function properly while drunk? Neither can high school students trying to better their future by learning information they will need throughout their entire

Applying and Strategizing Research

...Applying and Strategizing Research GEN 200 University of Phoenix September 19, 2010 Amidst numerous problems, time management is the most crucial problem I face in my day-to-day life. Time management is the range of skills, tools, and techniques used to manage time when accomplishing specific tasks, projects, and goals. From waking up in the morning, to falling asleep at night, managing time efficiently has been a nightmare to render. Possessing excess time to perform a task and not using it wisely is my nemesis because I always find myself unprepared and complete the task at the last minute. Some examples of not using time management effectively in my daily life are: arriving to work late, not preparing what to wear to work the night before, overextending my lunch break, and turning in homework late. Knowing how to prepare and plan ahead of time for any event will help overcome this problem. Finding a solution requires strategic planning using either a daily planner or an organizer found in most smart phones these days. Electronic organizers have more of an advantage because they can sort, organize and store more information than paper and pencil planners. However, if technology is not user-friendly, the idea of pen and paper will always remain available to use. Identifying the order of daily events and when they should take place is critical in managing time efficiently. For example, setting an alarm clock at five o’clock in the morning is a daily routine...

Personal Responsibility Paper

...degree. First, one must take the initiative by researching colleges and the courses they offer. A prospective student should make sure the college they wish to attend has good reviews and high graduation rates. After finding the right college, one must enroll and meet all requirements the course demands; participate in class discussions, turn in assignments on time, and above all, ask questions. Only you are responsible for what you do or do not understand. There is no blaming anyone else for your failures. If you want to do well in college classes, you must make sure you ask for any clarification you may need to be successful at any given task. Personal responsibility and college success go hand in hand. If you want that degree, you must hold yourself accountable for your actions. If you slack, you are setting yourself up for failure; however, if you take your life into your own hands, and make choices conducive to reaching your goals, you will receive that diploma. For instance, think positive “Generally, the higher the positive affect, the higher the GPA” (Nickerson, Diener, & Schwarz, 2011, Positive affect and college success, p. 719). Make certain you feel you are comfortable with the level of work you have to do; if it is too difficult speak up; if it is too challenging speak up. “Optimal levels of challenge are not only necessary for learning and talent development, but also for student involvement, intrinsic motivation, and academic success” (Schweinle & Helming...

Why High School Should Start Later

...Jenah Cooney May 15, 2012 College English/Surinak Senior Research Paper Period 2 Wake Up Later and Your Grades Will Be Greater High school is a part of every teenager’s life whether they like it or not. Although it is not a requirement; most, if not all, teenagers will experience at least one year of high school. With the experience of high school, students will also go through waking up early sometimes at five or six a.m. The starting time of high schools has been highly debated for several years. Those who debate this topic usually dispute on whether or not changing the time would be beneficial. Psychologists estimate that as many as 30% of children may have a sleep disorder at some point during childhood. Sleep disorders have implications both for social-emotional adjustment and for school performance. For this reason it is important for both parents and educators to understand how sleep works and how disruptions in normal sleep patterns can affect children and teenagers. Starting school just a half an hour later would benefit the most families and students, and also to accommodate for teens' sleep needs. One of the main beneficial topics to argue for starting school later is attendance. Schools should start later because it is proven that students will have higher attendance. If students can get more sleep, they are more likely to attend school on a regular basis. Studies have shown that after puberty, teenagers require more sleep, around nine and a half...

Adn vs Bsn

...American Nurses Association defined nursing as, “The protection, promotion and optimization of health and abilities, prevention of illness and injury, alleviation of suffering through the diagnosis and treatment of human response, and advocacy in the individuals, families, communities, and population.” There are three pathways to becoming a nurse. The first one is a three year diploma in a hospital setting. A two to three years associate degree program is the second option offered through a technical or community school. A four year BSN degree program offered at a college or university is the last pathway. To obtain an RN licensure, both (ADN) and (BSN) programs sit for National Licensure Examination (NCLEX). Although passing (NCLEX) is similar for both programs, this exam only measures minimal clinical competencies and not the total education preparation and skills needed to practice safely whether it is in a clinical, inpatient or outpatient setting. This paper will explore not only their professional, educational preparation, but also the differences in competencies between associate degree and baccalaureate of science nurse degree levels. In 1958, following the World War 11, to relieve the shortage of nurses demand prompted by the world war, the associate degree nursing (ADN) program was developed. ADN nurses would work as technical nurses under the supervision of professional nurses. However this was a temporary fix for the shortage of nurses post world war. The...

...this paper, I will discuss the different types of discrimination that LGBT youths are faced with and the effects on these youths. The paper will elaborate on the severe impacts on LGBT youths not only caused by discrimination but also due to lack of support and guidance. The paper will also discuss the roles of the parents and schools in helping minimize discrimination against LGBT youths. This paper will also hopefully instruct schools and parents to accept and support gay students rather than add to the discrimination that they already face. Doing so will reduce the high school drop out rate and most importantly the youth suicide rate. In essence, the purpose of this research paper is to identify the different effects on LGBT youths due to discrimination and to explore various actions that can and should be taken by schools and parents to help these youths live a normal and happy life. Therefore, my target audience is the school system as well as the parents of LGBT youths. Suicide is the leading cause of death among gay and lesbian youths. Gay and lesbian youths are 2 to 6 times more likely to attempt suicide than heterosexual youth. Over 30% of all reported teen suicides each year are committed by gay and lesbian youths. . . . Gays and lesbians are at much higher risk than the heterosexual population for alcohol and drug abuse. Approximately 30% of both the lesbian and gay male populations have problems with alcohol. Gay and lesbian youth are at greater risk for school failure...

Marijuama as a Gateway Drug

...Sociology 225 Research Paper Marijuana as a Gateway Drug The gateway theory is a hypothesis which states that the use of gateway drugs (alcohol, tobacco and marijuana) lead to the use of more illicit drugs such as heroin and cocaine. According to the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), marijuana is a Schedule I substance under the Controlled Substances Act. “Schedule I drugs are classified as having a high potential for abuse, no currently accepted medical use in treatment in the United States, and a lack of accepted safety for use of the drug or other substance under medical supervision.” Marijuana is thus considered by the U.S. government to be more dangerous than cocaine and opium - both Schedule II drugs, and at the same time a gateway to these harder and more addictive drugs. The government’s position is not only paradoxical, but should be a reason for debate as to the credibility of the gateway theory. A detailed look is warranted because of the magnitude it has on affecting U.S. drug policy. According to the “Reassessing the marijuana gateway effect” article, there are three phenomena which represent the evidence for a marijuana gateway effect. The first is “the relative risk of hard drug initiation for adolescent marijuana users vs. non-users. In one U.S. study, the risk of drug progression for a marijuana user was 85 times that of a non-user” (Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse 1994). The figure makes apparent sense because as will be seen an individual...

The Effects of Dream Length on the Relationship Between Primary Process in Dreams and Creativity

...1991 The Effects of Dream Length on the Relationship Between Primary Process in Dreams and Creativity Glenn Livingston l and Ross Levin l ,2 The effects of dream length on the relationship between primaty process in dreams and a measure of creativity unconfounded by IQ was investigated in a sample of 93 graduate students using the Auld, Goldenberg, & Weiss (1968) Scale of Primary Process Thought (SPPT) and a modified Wallach-Kogan (1965) creativity batte/yo Consistent with previous research, total and mean primary process were found to correlate significantly with creativity (r = .28, P < .01 and r = .23, P < .05, respectively). Both significant relationships disappeared, however, once the effects of dream length were partialled out, confirming Wood, Sebba, & Domino's (1989-90) contention that this relationship may be artifactual. It is suggested that dream length as an individual difference in and of itself may thus be a more fruitful variable to examine in future research investigating the relationship between creativity and dreams. KEY WORDS: dreaming; dream length; primary process; creativity. The contention that creativity and dreaming may reflect similar psychological processes has long been maintained by both the lay public and philosophers alike. In support of this, both the anecdotal and empirical psychological literature contain numerous references suggesting both a direct and analogical relationship between dreams and creativity (Adelson, 1960;...
