Donald C. Hambrick and James W. Fredrickson Executive Overview

After more than 30 years of hard thinking about strategy, consultants and scholars have provided an abundance of frameworks for analyzing strategic situations. Missing, however, has been any guidance as to what the product of these tools should be-or what actually constitutes a strategy. Strategy has become a catchall term used to mean whatever one wants it to mean. Executives now talk about their "service strategy," their "branding strategy," their "acquisition strategy," or whatever kind of they

Are You Sure You Have Strategy

...MgtS 4481 Sec. 5 Geoffry Bell, Ph. D. February 6, 2012 Hand-In Summary 1 Hambrick and Fredrickson’s literature review, Are you sure you have strategy? focuses on the key components of a strategy. Its purpose is to expand on the past 30 years of strategic frameworks and help us identify what actually constitutes a strategy. When executive call everything strategy, they create confusion, so this article works to dispel the misconception many executives and scholars hold that a strategy is a catchall term used to describe whatever they wish. Instead, Hambrick and Fredrickson persuade us that a sound strategy, or as they define – an integrated set of choices, incorporates five separate elements that must work together to create one unified strategy. These five key elements, which are guided by the company’s mission, objectives and strategic analysis form the strategy - consisting of these domains of choice: arenas, vehicles, differentiators, staging, and economic logic. Consideration should be placed on all five elements, and not just a few components of a strategy. These elements call not only for choice, but also preparation and investment. It is important that they align and support one another. Finally, only after the design of all five elements can the strategist plan other supporting activities that are needed to reinforce the strategy such as functional policies, organizational arrangements, and operating programs. The arenas element is the most fundamental choice...

If You Were the Ceo of a Multi-National Corporation Considering a Market-Entry Mode Strategy, What Questions Would You First Want to Have Answered? Be Sure to Explain Why.

...If I were the CEO of a multi-national corporation to consider a market entry mode strategy, there would mostly be the most important question that would come up into my mind is which market entry mode strategy will give my company higher profitability and larger market share. There are lot of market entry mode strategies like direct exporting, indirect exporting, licensing, franchising, wholly owned companies, joint venture, strategic alliance etc. however, before choosing the market mode strategy, I would definitely consider the market’s existing conditions that will back me to boost up my company’s bottom line. The first question that would come up is what is the condition of the economic factors of the country that my company has to deal with? It is very clear that for every market entry strategy mode, I need to consider the existing economic issues of the country to confirm my company’s profitability and future, like its inflation rate, interest rates, income levels, currency strength, balance of trade, tax, tariff & Excise Duty, and government controls over these issues. If there is any high inflation rate or the inflation rate is unstable like Zimbabwe, no market entry mode is going to work to ensure my profitability. If there is a high market interest rate that will hamper my future business prospect, I will not consider this country to enhance my business. The income levels of the country’s residence are a significant factor to set up a price of my product and forecasting...

Business Is War

...business school register controller 16 january 2012 The strategy in businesses can be compared to the strategy on the battlefield in many aspects. In both settings a good strategy is crucial to survive and reach your own goals and to prevent defeat by the enemy or competitor who, most probably, has opposing wills. In these pages, the strategy in businesses is linked to the military principles of war. I believe that there are quite some similarities between that what is educated at the Military Academy and that what I’ve learned at TiasNimbas. Although different lists with military principles of war circulate, the ones discussed in this paper are of frequent occurrence. On the battlefield as well as in business applying one principle makes is hard, or even impossible to apply an other at the same time. The commanding officer needs to weigh one against another and choose the best for the specific situation. Objective Direct every military operation towards a clearly defined, decisive, and attainable objective. This needs little to none translation to a non-combatant environment. If it’s not completely clear what you want to achieve, one thing is sure, you’ll never reach your objective. So start with making that clear and think of ways to evaluate the completion of your objective. You need to know and to understand where results come from in order to adapt and survive. Offensive When you have the initiative, it is you who decides where and when battles are fought. It prevents...

Strategies for Math and Note Taking

...Bianca Fields Miss Dibble SDS101 9 November 2015 Strategies for Math and Note Taking I believe Math is learned by doing the problems and doing the homework. The problems help you learn the formulas you need to know, to help with problem solving. I have learned from my own personal experience that you must keep up with the Instructor: attend class, read the text and do homework every day. Falling a day behind puts you at a disadvantage. Falling a week behind puts you in deep trouble. I have found that college Math is much different than high school math. College math class meets less often and covers material at about twice the pace than a High School course does. You are expected to understand new material much more quickly. So it is very important that if there is something you don’t understand, you should take responsibility for studying, recognizing what you do and don't know, and knowing how to get your Instructor to help you with what you don't know. When it comes to Math testing, it can be very stressful, as with taking any test. Some of the strategies, I have tried, is to look for the problems I definitely know how to do right away, and those that I have to think about. I start with the problems that I know for sure I can do. Then I try the problems I think I can figure out, then I finally try the problems I’m least sure about. I try to make sure I read the questions carefully, and do all parts of each problem. If I find that I am stuck on a problem, I don’t...
