As the long drive to hanger’s beach, everyone was laughing, singing, and dancing. We saw videos of our friends having fun at the beach already and I began to get excited. Everyone was drinking, smoking, and playing in the water. As I took in my surroundings, I began to get a bad feeling. Victorio, CSP, Managing Partner, Mosaic Family Business Center As companies continue to try to do more with less, the stress of doing the work of two or more people is taking a toll on employees. And that is making them less productive, less motivated and less likely to do their best work, says Ricci Victorio, CSP, managing partner at Mosaic Family Business Center. “As companies deal with lower budgets and tighten their belts, they are putting ever-greater demands on their employees,” says Victorio. “As an employer, you need to help your employees fill their cups back up, because they are being significantly drained. Whenever you have people being pushed at absolute top levels performing on all 100 cylinders all of the time, they run out of gas. And when they run out of emotional gas, negative behaviors start springing up.” Smart Business spoke with Victorio about how one-on-one coaching with employees can improve morale and help them work better together as a team. What is the value of executive coaching? It can improve morale and provide an internal vision for employees as they ask: What is my value? Why am I here? What am I doing? How can I do it better? Improved morale increases...

...10/29/13 Xerox PARC, Apple, and the Creation of the Mouse : The New Yorker ANNALS OF BUSINESS CREATION MYTH Xerox PARC, Apple, and the truth about innovation. by Malcolm Gladwell MAY 16, 2011 Print More Share Close Reddit Linked In Email The mouse was conceived by the computer scientist Douglas Engelbart, developed by Xerox PARC, and made marketable by Apple. I n late 1979, a twenty-four-year-old entrepreneur paid a visit to a research center in Silicon Valley called Xerox PARC. He was the co-founder of a small computer startup down the road, in Cupertino. His name was Steve Jobs. Xerox PARC was the innovation arm of the Xerox Corporation. It was, and remains, on Coyote Hill Road, in Palo Alto, nestled in the foothills on the edge of town, in a long, low concrete building, with enormous terraces looking out over the jewels of Silicon Valley. To the northwest was Stanford University’s Hoover Tower. To the north was Hewlett-Packard’s sprawling campus. www.newyorker.com/reporting/2011/05/16/110516fa_fact_gladwell?printable=true¤tPage=all 1/12 10/29/13 Xerox PARC, Apple, and the Creation of the Mouse : The New Yorker All around were scores of the other chip designers, software firms, venture capitalists, and hardware-makers. A visitor to PARC, taking in that view, could easily imagine that it was the computer world’s castle, lording over the valley below—and, at the time, this wasn’t far from the truth. In 1970, Xerox had assembled the...

Studying

...administration degree, you’re much more likely to succeed. Here are 5 factors that can affect your studying: 1.Weather- Seriously. You can’t control the weather—but you can stay aware of how it affects you, both positively and negatively. A sunshiney day is going to put you in a positive mood, but it could also be contributing to your urge to procrastinate and go play. On a gloomy, rainy day, time can sometimes feel like it’s slipping away—and with it, your study hours. And it’s not just emotional: bad weather, bad roads, and delayed buses can screw up your whole schedule. All of these factors are things to make notes of and plan for when it comes to arranging your day, and your study time. 2. Your social life. It’s important to have good people in your life to help keep you balanced, because you can’t dedicate your entire emotional well-being to your medical specialties training. But it’s also too easy to let the balance slip. Try to strike a sane, healthy equilibrium between being a social butterfly and being a shut-in. It’ll help keep you focused and emotionally stable, and both things are vital to your success as a student. 3. Your health-Sometimes it feels like the only way to squeeze in all the time you need in a day is to chug coffee and spend all your extra cash on sugar-stuffed energy drinks and candy. But while that’s good for short-term...

I currently take 4 classes, in which I will come up with a plan to achieve my goal to have a 3.0 by the end of the semester. When students earn a below average grade on examinations or a report card, it does not necessarily mean that they did not study hard enough. There are many intelligent children who do not perform well in school, not because they cannot comprehend classroom lessons, but because of external factors that affect their academic success. Many factors have been identified to influence academic performance whether positively or negatively. One of these factors that the researcher’s identified is the living situation of college students. The living situations that a college student experience are varied due to the diversity of housing options and environments available. Some of the aspects of college student living environments may act as stress factors in students’ lives. The stress related to living situations that college students’ experience has several sources including relationships with roommates, the condition of the rooms, apartments, or houses that students inhabit, the neighborhood, area on campus, and general living environment. Strong Buy

...HP – STRONG BUY Equity Research • IT • 19 August 2011 • Jyske Markets Accounts This is a case recommendation. The company will be included in our equityresearch universe as long as it holds price potential justifying a BUY recommendation. When this is no longer the case, we will discontinue our coverage although our recommendation is ACCUMULATE, REDUCE or SELL. HP price fall is overdone We restate our STRONG BUY recommendation for HP and see yesterday’s dramatic price fall as an attractive opportunity to buy. This particularly applies to investors who are patient enough to wait for better market conditions/macro-economic improvement. HP lowers its outlook: as feared, HP (like Dell (STRONG BUY) earlier in the week) last night downgraded its full-year outlook. It was, however, a relatively moderate downgrade since the sales forecast was lowered by 1.6% and EPS by 3%. Whereas HP previously guided 2011 sales and EPS at USD 129bn-130bn and USD 5.0, respectively, HP now guides USD 127.2bn-127.6bn and USD 4.82-4.86, respectively. HP’s forecast is still a shade better than we had estimated (USD 127.6bn and USD 4.7). The reduced forecast reflects a sluggish willingness to buy among private business customers and that corporate customers are now more hesitant due to the rising macro-economic uncertainty. For Q4, HP guides sales at USD 31.1bn-32.5bn as well as Non-GAAP EPS of USD 1.12-1.16 compared with consensus at USD 33.9bn and USD 1.30, respectively. In addition, HP announced...

...How to Be a Successful PhD Student (in Computer Science (in NLP/ML)) Mark Dredze (Johns Hopkins University) Hanna M. Wallach (University of Massachusetts Amherst) Version 1.0, March 20, 2012 Being a graduate student can be extremely rewarding and a lot of fun, but it’s also hard work. Like anything in life, there are ways to succeed and ways to fail. Hopefully, you will find a good support network that can help you learn what it takes to be a good graduate student. However, not everyone is able to find such a network, and it’s important to learn these lessons early. This guide was written based on our experiences as graduate students and our experiences advising graduate students, specifically, PhD students in NLP and machine learning; however, we hope many of the points are applicable to a wider audience. Where possible, we have indicated when advice is field-specific. Beyond that, the advice is listed in no particular order. No doubt there will be points with which you disagree. That’s totally fine -- there are certainly points about which even we had differing views; however, before you decide to ignore these points, it’s well worth taking the time to understand why we included them. Becoming a PhD Student Why Get a PhD? This question is dealt with extensively in other documents, so we will not discuss it in detail here; however, we want to emphasize the importance of asking this question. Getting a PhD will change your career path dramatically. Not only does getting...

Convocation

...one stage in a student's life to another. Before the graduation, candidates are referred to as grandaunts. The date of graduation is often called graduation day. The graduation itself is also called commencement, convocation or invocation. In case of study and education graduation is the meaning of getting a higher degree of three years after 10+2 from a university or college, but that degree must come under the degree of graduation. Quite apart from that though, the graduation ceremony fulfills an essential human function as a ritual of transition, in this case marking the move from student to worker. The whole idea of graduation is believed to have started in the 12th Century, introduced by scholastic monks who wore robes during the entire graduation ceremony. It has kept on evolving ever since. Gill, L. (2012, January 15). Convocation and its importance. Graduation. Retrieved August 7, 2012. Scholars, especially anthropologists, consider graduation to be a rite of passage. A rite of passage is a ritual that marks a change from one stage of life to the next in a person’s life. The pomp and ceremony of the graduation ceremony can lend itself to accusations of irrelevance and elitism. Such criticisms I think miss the point. The occasion certainly wasn't irrelevant to the students and families who attended on the day. In fact it was laden with meaning. Many had shown remarkable fortitude in seeing through their studies often in the face of competing personal, family and financial...

Fedex vs Ups: Competing with Contrasting Strategies in China

...without committed support from Finance. Many companies recognize this challenge and give substantial attention to financial integration soon after announcing the deal. However, this urgency creates its own problems. Under time pressure, finance professionals will feel rushed to combine disparate numbers and harmonize divergent processes. If they do not yet have a clear vision of the new company’s future state, they may implement manual temporary work-arounds, such as preparing manual reconciliations of customer accounts, that require incremental work effort, cost and risk to Finance. By focusing only on interim integration work and not considering the future state in parallel, many companies risk that the manual interim state will one day become the future state. Maintaining disparate and manually integrated systems limits opportunity for future standardization and cost reduction, thereby preventing promised synergy capture. Only through proper investment in process and system automation, such as integrating financial and management reporting processes and tools, can the cost of Finance be reduced, service levels to the business be optimized, and finance function synergies be realized. Companies who implement temporary manual solutions to integrate the...

Hydraulic Fracturing

...BP Paper Rough Draft 11/23/2012 April 20, 2012 British Petroleums drilling vessel Deepwater Horizon suffered an explosion, and then began expelling enormous amounts of crude oil into the Gulf of Mexico. Although many different individuals and organizations attempted to help BP fix their spewing well, it wasn’t until July 15 that the vent was cut off. Through our research we have developed an analysis that examines the cause of the cause of the disaster, the event itself and its aftermath. We would also like to offer our recommendations on the subject. British Petroleum is an international oil company base in London and is one the nations leading oil and gas producer (History of oil spill). In spite of BP’s market share, as a company they have an unfortunate history of safety breeches including a 2005 explosion at oil refinery in Texas (Deep Water dDrilling). These accidents seem to be a cause of weak corporate safety culture and cost leadership (On average, fifty percent of management bonuses were awarded on the basis of cost cutting). The lack of proper safety practice and absence of oversight has ultimately resulted in infrastructure and architectural failure (Deep Water Drilling). As with any disaster, each party involves attempts to prove their innocence and are all too quick to point a finger at a party that must be guiltier than they and the Deepwater Horizon spill is no different. Although BP owned the oil, other companies had considerable interaction with Horizon;...
